Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Boy/Girl Ultrasound pics?

We have our ultrasound appointment next week.  Our hospital won't tell the sex of the baby.

I'd like to compare what to look for so if I catch a glance I might be able to tell.

We'll be doing a 3d ultrasound at a private clinic in another month or so, so we'll find out for sure then.

Re: Boy/Girl Ultrasound pics?

  • wait...why won't they tell you the sex? if it is a gross anatomy check/scan then they have to look at the genitals. could you slip the lady a 20?

ETA: can you ask for a picture of the genitals? boys are pretty obvious and girls look like little hamburgers.

  • I had tons of u/s during my pg (placenta previa that corrected itself later) and I couldn't tell at all in any of them. I wasn't really looking to find out, but still, it seems like you might be better off waiting until you get your later u/s.

  • In my experience of having boy u/s, it's been obvious.  With my son, I found out at 15 weeks when I had an u/s I wasn't planning on because of bleeding.  I didn't want to find out because DH wasn't with me but I looked at the screen and I knew.  I said to the doctor - Hmmm...that's a boy, right?  and he confirmed.  DS #2 was obvious as well.

We don't get photos from our hospitals and they won't tell the sex.  It's not medically necessary so they don't do it.  Instead I have to pay $200 out of pocket to find out.

  • It's kind of hard to describe, but with little girls, you'll see three little lines (at least we did with dd).

Sucks that you have to pay extra to find out the sex!

  • When we went for our "big" u/s, I asked the lady to put it on the parts and let me see if I could figure it out.  I did right away.  Here is a picture- it's pretty obvious though :)

    This was at 18 weeks.

  • Will they tell you what you're looking at for the other parts of the body (like stomach, kidneys, etc).  If so, wait until they point out the bladder...my u/s tech highlighted the bloodflow in red and I could tell from there what it was going to be.  The boy is pretty obvious and for the girl, look for three small white lines parallel to each other...for mine, those lines were more bold than other things on the screen.

  • Ugh, that sucks that they won't tell you.

Here is my u/s pic at 14w2d. It was VERY obvious. My u/s tech said it was very obvious, and I totally agree.

  • This was DS1 ... very obvious! Although I'm not sure I would have noticed on my own. They had to snap these pictures really quick, because he was moving all over the place.

ETA: I can't believe they won't tell you either! I have never heard of that before!

Great tip!  They do point out the organs, so that will be very helpful.

    This made me LOL :)

  • my SIL's friend just had her baby and throughout the whole pregnancy the ultrasounds were saying it was a girl....nope.  she had a boy!

  • Hopefully DD # 2 won't be mad at me for posting this on the internet (after she is born).  :)

You can definitely see the "three lines".

I don't know if it is because I have only had ultrasounds that turn out to be all boy, but I am never good at distinguishing girl. I mean with boys, it's easy, but I don't even see the 3 definite lines in this pic! lol
