I'm new to the 2nd tri (and some would say I'm jumping the gun by a few days) - but figured y'all would have a better answer for this question than 1st tri. Obviously I'm planning ahead...
DH and I live in a different city than either of our family. Both of our families are from smaller cities - in opposite areas of the country. Where my family lives most people register at Target, or Toys-R-Us (that has a super small Babies-R-Us section) and little local children's boutiques. Where DH's family lives...I don't even know where people register - maybe Target or Walmart? I don't think they have a Toys-R-Us even. We will likely have a shower in my hometown, one in his, and one in the city where we live. My problem is that we live in city that has BuyBuyBaby (BBB) - and it's awesome. Plus there are a lot of great children's boutiques here. But, none of our family's would be able to buy from those local places and they're not big on doing on-line shopping (like to buy something tangible). Honestly, there's not much at Target or Walmart that I want (besides basic stuff like diapers, wipes, pacifiers, etc). I haven't really looked at BRU - just because it seems redundant to register there and BBB - and the selection is so much better at BBB. The other thing is that there are little things that I like at other places - besides these. For instance: the bedding I really want is from Pottery Barn Kids. The moses basket and stand that I really want is from Restoration Hardware. And I love the clothes from Janie and Jack. I was thinking that I would just buy those things on my own - but my girlfriends have "scolded" me about not leaving anything for other people to buy (we've already bought baby furniture, glider, humidifier, monitors - found great deals we couldn't pass up). But, I would be so embarrassed to tell people giving me a shower that I'm registered at Target, BBB, BRU, Walmart, Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, and a local children's boutique. That just seems ridiculous! I'm just not sure what to do. I don't want to seem greedy or presumptuous by registering everywhere under the sun, but I don't want to frustrate those attending showers in our home towns either.
So, is it tacky to register at so many places? Maybe I could register at all of them, but only give a few locations to the hosts - depending on which shower it is???
Re: Registry Locations - what's too many? (long)
if you want one thing from restoration hardware, buy it yourself. i would only create a registry if there were enough items on it to warrant having the registry.
since the store arrangements are different where each family is, you won't have to tell the hostess every single place. I'd just tell them the stores that are most applicable to the people attending that particular local shower, kwim?
I would say register at the 2-3 places that have the most stuff you want. The other places you can buy the few things you want yourself.

Correct me someone if I am wrong, but doesn't the Amazon registry give you the ability to link stuff from a bunch of different retailers? Like having 3 registries all in one place? If this is the case, then it would totally solve your problem, those who want to online shop can do so, and those who want to go to a store can look there and then go buy.
Or I could be completely wrong

You certainly could do this, and if you're anticipating a local shower (and if your locals are more likely to be the sorts who shop online) you could start putting together a universal registry through someplace like Amazon.com so that way you could put this and that from various places onto a registry rather than having a ton of tiny ones.
I would say 2-3 places max. Make sure you delete the registries that you aren't going to use so people don't find them by accident. Sometimes people will look at some of the big baby places for a registry so they can start shopping early.
Amazon.com is a great idea too! I would just make sure you have some things that are available in stores near you as some people prefer to shop in store or wait til the last minute. Good luck!
