At meals which do you give first- bottle or solids?

Just wondering.  In the morn- I give him a bottle first but for lunch and dinner I give the solids first.  I was thinking about switching it up and giving him the bottle first and then an hour or so later giving him some solids.  What works for you?

  • I usually give her some of the solids first but give her the bottle in between bites. Otherwise- she fills up on the solids and won't take the bottle.

  • We're EBF so I always nurse first, then offer a solid meal 30min to 1 hour after he nurses.

I think it should be the same with formula? My pedi said that solids should never replace a nursing session/bottle for the first year. It should only compliment it. Always offer BM/Bottle first.

  • We do solids about an hour after his first bottle/nursing

and about 1.5 hours before his last  nursing

  • I give a bottle first, since it is terribly difficult to get her to finish a bottle as it is.
  • bottle first and solids a 1/2 hour later
    J - 9/6/09 L and A - 1/17/12
  • This is what I do. I also give a sippy cup with water with his solids, although he never drinks much of it. ETA: sorry, I meant quote traycee.
  • always solids first.  The only time I gave a little bottle first was when he first started eating solids because a little formula would make him not so starving, so he'd be in a better mood to eat from a spoon.

  • We give solids and bottles at seperate meal times.  She'll have yogurt first thing for breakfast then drink 2-4 oz before her morning nap.  Then she has one more 4 oz bottle a few hours after that then she'll eat some fruit and puffs for lunch then another bottle inbetween lunch and dinner and then veggies for dinner and another bottle before bed.  I am beginning to think this is a ridiculous way of feeding though.  Should they be eating less times a day now?  This post is making me think we are doing this wrong!

  • She always gets solids at least an hour after the bottle. I want to make sure she gets the formula she needs still.
