Anyone reseal their hardwood floors?

If so, did you do it yourself or contract it out?

Our floors need resealing.  Eventually, I'd like to refinish them, but its not worth it now with two young boys and a dog.

From what I understand, you buff the floor to remove the polyurethane and then you reseal it after that.  Is that right?

I'd love to hear whatever you know about it!

  • You don't buff it, you sand it.  I have hired people to do it, and done it myself.  I won't ever do it myself again.  It is a messy job.  The main part of the floor is not very hard, like vacuuming, but the edging was very hard on my back.  Maybe if you are used to leaning over and using strength it would not be so bad.  The poly, and I used water based when I did it myself, stank and me sick.  Don't forget about molding either, we had to redo that because it was totally junked up.  It is totally doable and if you don't have the money to pay (I didn't) then it is worth it.  My floors went from pink turned brown shag carpet to stellar, potty barn worthy floors in about 1 week.

Are you talking about refinishing, JOE?   I am not interested in doing that just yet.  Resealing just removes the old polyurethane, not any of the wood, which I think is why the articles I read state you just need to buff them.

Here is one article I read :

  • Eh, maybe you're right and it does require sanding.  I just found this:

Sounds like a lot of work!  Maybe I'll get a quote or two...

  • Buffing is something you do to wax floors.  I have not heard of buffing poly floors.  Buffing wax floors is super easy.  I have done it dozens of times.  You could just lightly sand and put down another coat of poly I guess, not sure that would improve the look, but it might at least protect the wood some until you wanted to refinish.
