carrying LO around

So, I guess he's really too young to be manipulating us at not quite 4 months, but the little guy is so fussy lately and doesn't want to be put down for very long.  If you leave him for too long, he starts crying, and sometimes when he sees us, he just smiles, like "yes, pay attention to me!", but mostly he continues to cry until we pick him up... and that works for a little bit, but then we have to carry him around.  I've resorted to walking him around the house in the stroller.  It's especially bad when he's tired, but he doesn't want to go to sleep.

But I think even with the carriers, my arms are really too short to do anything else but hold him over the carrier, or maybe I can do something one-handed.

So anyway, it feels like he's playing us, but we think he's too young to be doing that.  Thoughts? Suggestions?

Re: carrying LO around

  • I never really minded carrying DD around b/c I knew that stage would not last very long. As a toddler, she wants to run around and play and is not very cuddly except once in a while. IMO - enjoy it while it lasts! Before you know it, you'll miss the physical closeness.

  • pp has a great point, it doesn't last long! I always carry/carried my babies around, do you have a sling? They are a life saver, even if you think your arms are too short you'd be surprised at what they can do. Your arms don't get tired and you can just stick them in there and keep doing stuff.
  • DD does this too.  I think partly she prefers the view from on high rather than from the same old bouncy seat at floor level.  (And partly she just likes to be the center of attention!)  I will sometimes set aside things I can do with DD in the Bjorn for those times she won't be put down and DH can't help - anything but bending over to the washing machine or dishwasher, since I'm afraid she'll fall out, and cooking.  I'm hoping the exersaucer will start to enthrall her more, because it's hard being full-time entertainment when there are other things that need to get done.

  • My babies needed to be carried as well.  They just weren't very happy being put down and especially around naptimes or for sleep.  Both of mine eventually grew out of it and they eventually slept in their cribs for naps (not just the swing or my arms) and STTN in their cribs too.  I was much more laid back about it with #2 since I knew that #1 had outgrown it and it was really just SO much easier to give in and carry them around.
  • Has he always been like this?  If not, it sounds like he's just more aware of what's going on.  My kids have gone through hold-me stages for a week or two at a time at various points, but not their whole lives.  Honestly, that would have driven me nuts.  I will say  DS is a lot less content to sit around in his bouncy than DD was.  He likes taking turns in the bumbo, and if he's in the bouncy, he needs something to look at, like the chandelier swinging back and forth, or just discovered that if we clip a mylar balloon to the bouncy in his line of sight, it's like baby crack.   If I sing to him while he's hanging out on his own,  that also makes him a lot happier.  Sorry so long.  I hope something in there helps!

Ditto this!  I miss the holding/cuddling!

Also, if you want to be able to do something while he's in a carrier, he's probably big enough now (if he can hold his head up) to do a back carry, which will free up your arms.  DD loves the back carry in the ergo.

  • I agree with the others, enjoy this stage while it lasts.  And I highly recommend the Ergo or a moby wrap.

Not always... well, I guess he has,  but it's way more often now.   It used to be only once in awhile, but now it's several times everyday.

Thanks for all the suggestions - we will try them!
