Must Haves for year 2?

Hard to believe my little guy is turning 1 this week!! My mother-in-law is desperate to get him something - are there any items that were life savers for that second year? We're feeling very blessed and like there's absolutely nothing he needs other than clothes so I'm at a loss. We also have a small house - so not much room for stuff! Any suggestions??

  • DD is 16mo old and she loves balls and books, she will play with some of her toys but we have so many she just kinda goes from one to another. Perhaps a potty if you are planning to potty train this year or a stepping stool to teach him to climb up to the sink to wash his hands. Some larger size bath hoodie towels? Eating utensils, straw/sippy cups are another idea.

if you plan to move him to a big boy bed, perhaps some sheets/bedding set for that? a little bicycle/tricycle?

  • DS is 20 months. His favorite things since turning 1 have been his ride on car, Mega Bloks, puzzles (really likes sound puzzles), his play kitchen and food, his stick horse and any and all balls.
  • ditto the megabloks...huge hit with DS.  He has this megablok table that has been terrific and provides hours of entertainment.

He also loves farm animals and his FP barn.

And he really enjoys board books!

  • Books, toys for the toddler phase, like a pushing toy, balls, blocks, cars, and lots of books! (that aren't board books).  I really want to get DD a radio flyer wagon, she loves riding in them.
  • Rain boots and a rain coat for spring, an outdoor ride on for summer (trike or wagon, ect), blocks are a huge hit, as are any art supplies -- generally the messier the better.   Those were dd1's favorites.

why books that aren't board books?  my 20 month old still needs to be supervised around "real" books.  i keep those aside to read to her directly...as her patience to sit through a story has gotten better in the past month or two - but the majority of her books are board books, and i will often find her sitting at her table "reading" them.

Yeah, my 19 month old has recently gotten more interested in the picture books and less interested in the board books.  I  meant that usually by 1 most kids already have a bunch of board books and it's nice to have the variety of the longer books with more of a story.
