Babies: 9 - 12 Months

anyone BF and do purees? 6-8m

When I went to a LLL meeting the other day I asked a question about pureed baby food and they all looked at me like I had farted or something...thats why I rarely go to any meetings b/c they just make me feel stupid. Anyone else out there in the 6-8m range BF and feed purees instead of finger foods? J wants absolutely nothing to do with his puffs and I tried some mashed real banana once and he could have cared less.

  • Is that not normal? I missed that memo, too.

Right now she has only had rice cereal and oatmeal, and I'm planning on starting purees next week. I have no immediate plans to start finger foods.

Don't let them make you feel like an idiot. I hate that.

  • i do purees - no plans to start finger food anytime soon.
  • I BF DD and did purees.  She ate them until she was 18 months old.  She still prefers her food purees (smoothies) at almost 4.  Without purees, she would have starved.

DS is a whole other ball of wax.  He prefers non-purees.

They probably looked like that because when you raised your arm to ask a question, they saw that you shaved your pits.  My interactions with  people in that group here have not so great.  Super judgy.  I drink diet soda.

  • We bf and do purees. They must all do blw.

  • we do purees.  My pedi basically follows gerber recommendations.  At 7 months my DD gets BM but also 3 meals a day.  We were told at her appt that she has to keep getting cereal for two of the meals.  She doesnt have the pincer grasp down so finger food would be pointless in our house.  Dont let other moms make you feel bad.  Remember you are the mom and you know whats best for your LO
  • Yeah I did at that age...sometimes still do.  What the heck is wrong with that???

Don't let them get to you!

  • Yes we EBF and do purees.

We started with cereal at 6 mos and now do 2.5oz of fruit in the morning and 2.5oz of veg in the evening.

That is annoying they treated you that way. I know plenty of ppl who EBF and do purees.

  • My babies will only eat purees so its that or nothing.

  • We do a combo of BF, purees and finger foods.

L much prefers to self feed (and FYI he had not teeth until receantly and still does not have the pincher grasp and he is very efficient at self feeding a larger variety of foods).

I do purees purely for my convenience sometimes (selfish I know) and sometimes he is tired and hungry and would rather be fed. He also really likes cereal in the morning so I feed him that and yogurt. However he LOVES pancakes when DH makes those and usually eats whatever we eat for dinner.

This is what we're doing also.  DD varies in how much she chooses to eat when it comes to cereal or purees but she is still nursing (or taking bottles of BM/formula when I am at work) probably 5-6 times a day.  That seems weird that they would react that way - I thought purees were the natural next step...?

This is us as well. We do the lazy person's BLW. He gets yogurt/purees at daycare and if I don't have anything nutritious to offer him finger food-wise (like on pizza night, LOL). He likes both but prefers to self-feed.

I'm surprised they looked at you like you were crazy. I could see if it was a younger baby, but I'm surprised that ALL of them are BLW'ers.

  • don't let them make you feel inferior. I EP'd but for 6-8 months we were using half puree and have puffs, depending on if it were a meal or a snack.  do what you want when you want (following pedi's recs of course).  LO's go through so many stages, as long as you are giving him a good mixture of things I really wouldn't let yourself be concerned. Moms do too much comparison and it's hard to remember all babies are different!

  • We also BF and DS gets one jar of puree every day for dinner. We're going to up it to two then three, but not sure when yet. I tried giving him a tiny bit of a MumMum and he made such a fuss about it (to the point where he made himself vomit). No plans to introduce any other finger foods yet.

I didn't know that was anything to be considered unusual.

  • We do purees and as finger food only give fruits (he loves to chew on apples). I don't see anything wrong with that. DH doesn't want to give DS puffs yet.

  • we do!

he loves purees. we tried finger foods at 6 months, but that was a fail. we tried the mashed bananas too and he wouldn't eat any.

  • I do mostly purees and some finger food...but he really doesn't eat much of the finger food.
  • thanks everyone. I thought that this was pretty common...
