Babies: 0 - 3 Months

To change or not to change? That is the question...

Typically our routine is diaper care, food, diaper care, sleep...Noah tends to poop during the last ounce of his bottle. However during the night I can't decide if I should change his duaper or not. On the one hand I don't want to wake him up and risk him not going to sleep, on the other hand he will be sitting in poo for 3 hours. What would you do?

  • I may be a terrible mother for this- but for all nighttime changes I put on this diaper cream we got. It's very thick, and doesn't come off very easy. It's too hard to get him to relax and go back to sleep so I won't wake him.

Usually his "last" feeding he'll get put in bed dirty or not (obviously not if it's a ridiculous blowout or something) and he'll sleep for 4 hours or so, wake up and want food. I change him, feed him, and he goes back to sleep for another 4 hours or so.

He's a really mellow baby and won't cry if his diaper's dirty, but we haven't had any issues with diaper rash so I figure it must be working for us.

  • DS started to go 3 hours between feedings and not totally waking up to eat so I usually feed him and put him right back to bed unless he's awake. If he's awake, I'll change him.  Before I put him down for the night I put diaper cream on to prevent rash. He typically wakes up twice during the night so I change him after his second feeding whether he's awake or not.
  • I personally would never leave LO in a poopy diaper for 3 hours.   I change him when he needs to be changed.  If he is tired he will sleep through it or go back to sleep.  If he isnt tired, then he wouldnt sleep much longer anyway.

I always change diapers when they are wet or dirty....that is just me though. :)

this. ?sometimes I don't want to because I just want to let her sleep, but I always change a dirty diaper. ?I just can't knowingly let her sit in mess.?

  • I change poo diapers overnight but if it's wet I won't.   I would never let him sit for 3 hours in poo if I knew it was there.
  • My LO is bottle fed. I feed her most of her bottle then change her and then let her finish off her bottle. I think finishing off the last of her bottle relaxes her again after the diaper change and helps her to back to sleep. Plus, I do not want to have her get used to wearing a dirty diaper. I think it will make potty training very difficult if she doesn't mind being dirty.
    siggy should be here!
  • I would change it. For DD I check  and if it's wet or dirty I just make sure our room is kept dim and quiet, her white noise machine is on and move her around slowly. SHe usually dozes through the diaper change and reswaddling. Then a few minutes cuddling and she is out again.

This is what I do, also.

  • I change near the end of her feeding. I burp, change, re-swaddle and then let her nurse for a few more minutes.

  • If he was sleeping, I'd let him sleep. But, he hates being wet or dirty, so he usually won't sleep until I get a dry diaper on him.

  • If it's poop, change it. That can cause a pretty nasty rash.

That being said, if LO has peed before bed and she's already asleep ... we don't wake her. But we always wake for poop.
