Day care inconvenient location?

Would you (or do you) drive pretty far out of your way to take your LO to daycare?  I'm interviewing an in-home place that I really like, and the price is right, but it's 15 miles from my house (in the opposite direction from my office).  So I'd have to drive 15 miles to day care, then it would be about 25 miles to my office.  WDYT?

Re: Day care inconvenient location?

  • No. I would need my daycare to be in between my work and home. Preferably close to either one and also close to the pediatricians. I don't have the time for that extra commute time.

  • No way - don't even tempt yourself. When you LO arrives you will be busier than you ever thought possible. I'd get a place close to your house.
  • Nope.  Not a chance.

That extra 30 miles every day is going to wear on you, really quickly.

  • No, I wanted my daycare close to home, within a few miles.  We have about 4 centers that fit that bill (I didn't want in home) and we went with a great one that takes me 5 mins max to get to from my house and I can take the highway or back roads.  It is is on the way to both my office and DH's and next year when my DD starts Pre-K at the elementary, they are in opposite directions but still off a main road that is the same.

  • I would keep looking.  You have lots of time still.

You'll find that that extra driving time eats into your quality time, and who needs that.  BUT, if you can't find anything else you like, then by all means it's worth it.  There is nothing worse than leaving your child with someone you don't feel comfortable with, and driving a few extra miles is worth that peace of mind.

  • I did this for 2+ years.  It got old fast but it worked for us (til DD was ~1... then it's too long a story to type out here).

Our house , home, sitter looked like this (geographically):

    Home..............work.....................................sitter

If you *love* her and can't find anything even close to comparable, tehn you can do it but I'd say you shoudl do it only until the baby is 6 mos/ 1 y.o.  Then it's time to look again.  It's rough but definitely do-able.

  • We had this dilemma...and wound up going w/somewhere between work and home and close to our pedi.

I loved the place that was out of the way, but I have thought so many times about all of the extra hours on the road...and am so glad we found somewhere closer, esp. when I have to take off work to get to pedi appts.

  • I do this with DS every day. It actually was about 5 mins from work and then our office moved and not it is about 15 minutes the opposite direction from home. But I love love love the in home DCP watching my son. I feel more comfortable with her than anyone. Then again she was my DCP when I was a kid.

I think you should find someone you are comfortable with.

That's so awesome that you use the DCP who cared for you!

  • I drive about 15 minutes out of the way. I live in a small town with only a few choices and already changed from a closer daycare because DD wasn't being watched. If you are in a bad situation- you will do anything to make it better.

  • We did it for about 2 years. We each added about 30 min to our daily commute, which otherwise were pretty short. In general, I think it's not a great idea but I think your speciifc situation is the deciding factor. If you work 50 hours per week and have an hour worth of commute than I don't think it's a good choice. But if you work 32 hours and have a 10 min commute without daycare mayb it would be just fine for you. KWIM?
  • We've been doing this for the past 3 weeks.  We looked at a bunch of daycares and really only loved the one that was a 20 min. drive in the opposite direction of work.  After only a week or two, we decided it wasn't the best option for us.  It's added 45 min. to my husband's commute in the morning and 45 min. to my commute in the evening.  I hate having that much less time with my DD in the evening before she needs to go to bed.  We are in the process of hiring a nanny to watch DD in our home.  I will be so much happier when I can drive straight home from work and spend time with DD right away.
