2nd Trimester

Braxton Hicks?

When is it normal to start feeling Braxton hicks? I've started feeling some really weird spasms on my stomach and I don't know what they are! I don't know if it's gas, or cramps, or BH's or anything else.

It's a little pain that starts and goes away after a few seconds. It's not really painful just uncomfortable.

Anyone ever felt somthing similar?

Re: Braxton Hicks?

  • Your uterus can start to contract as early as 16 weeks.  I started feeling my Braxton Hicks at 21 weeks.  It feels like your whole abdoment gets tight for a few seconds, then releases.  If you touch your stomach, it feels hard, but it's not painful.  A little weird, sometimes uncomfortable, but no pain.

  • How often are you feeling those sensations?  If it feels like a belt is tightening around your waist, you need to call the doctor.

For me, BH aren't painful but they are uncomfortable.  I was about 15 weeks when they started.  In my case, not enough water was the culprit.  Make sure you are getting a lot of fluids.  I was getting 60 oz.  The doc recommends 80 minimum.

  • Around 16 weeks I started feeling tightness in my stomach/uterus area every once in awhile. It never lasts long and my uterus gets super hard. At first I thought it was the baby's head pushing against the uterus but soon realized it was BH.

I'm feeling it one maybe every 15-20 minutes. It's really around my waist area and only on the right side.

  • Call your doc, just to be safe.  Someone told me on here that you should have no more than 3-4 per hour.  My nurse told me that if it feels like a belt tightening to call immediately.  Mine are 3-4/day.

  • My doctor said if it happens more than 3-4 times in an hour to call (even if they aren't painful).  Make sure you're drinking enough water too!  I haven't felt them yet, but my whole stomach has been feeling tight the last few days, but I think it's just because I'm growing even more.
