Re: Sewing Classes

  • what part of Bama are you in?

The Smocking Bird in Homewood offers classes, I think.

  • I am in North Alabama, in Limestone County
  • I'll be no help. I only know of classes in the B'ham area!
  • I think you'd be surprised at how easy it is...try the class at Hancock. IMHO, there are only a couple of stitches that you'll typically use and from what I've heard there's typically a good teacher:student ratio at those classes and you may have some one-on-one {or close to it} sewing instruction so you can ask more advanced questions to cover everything.

Do you already have a machine? Have you worked with patterns before?

Also, often the sewing instructors will sew on the side because it's a way for them to make a little extra {you may be able to pay them to sew your dress patterns}.

  • I am teaching myself...I play around with it mostly right now.  A suggestion that I saw on the Craft board was to take coloring book pages and do not thread the bobbin and just go around the outline to teach you how to follow the lines and do curves and such.

I really want to learn to do patterns, but I am trying to get the basics down.  It's really not too difficult, it just takes some patience and practice.

Also I am planning on checking out these videos..another find from the Craft board.

  • well I tried to teach myself, i didn't do so well...I also tried to watch those videos and they ddin't work all the way thru...so i gave up...
