Alabama Babies

For the moms of girls...

Do you put hairbows in their hair?

If so, how do you keep them there? I love to put hairbows on K's head but she snatches them out of her hair and has gotten into a habit of "throwing" them away. Same with headbands. It stinks because I think the bows look so cute on her!

Any suggestions?

If you do put bows on your DD, do you send her to the sitter with them? Or just on special occasions?

Re: For the moms of girls...

  • I have always put bows in Lyla's hair. She went through a stage of doing exactly what you described. It was a stage. During it I still put them in her hair. If she took it out, I put it back in, most times. It can be a battle but it's worth the fight if you want her to like bows later. (only from my experience)

For the past few months she has wanted me to put a bow in almost every day and in recent weeks she wants to pick out which one to wear. She is learning how to match the bows to the colors on her shirt too. A bow is part of getting dressed for the day unless we are hanging at home and then I only do it sometimes.

I do put a bow in Lyla's hair for daycare unless I leave it down, which is almost never. (We are trying to let her hair grow to all one length before we trim it, so I have to put it up a lot.) Every day when we pick her up her hair is down, a hot mess, and her bow is either clipped to her sheet or in her bag. Although she does this every day, I still put it in her hair because I want her to be used to it. KWIM? Oh, and she only does this at daycare. She never really takes her bows out on the weekends, I don't get it.

To me a bow is just like a shirt or socks, part of her outfit. Good luck! Sorry so long!

  • We always put bows in Allie's hair.  Some brands/kinds stay better than others.  If she is in the car in her seat, she will take it out so I clip it on her bag and and then when I get her out I put it back in.  We have the same fight of taking it out, throwing it, etc.  She doesn't normally wear one during the day to my mom's house, but this week I have started putting small barrettes in her hair to hold her bangs back since we're growing them out.  I think it is just something you have to fight and teach her to leave it alone, or they will never keep it in.

  • I was never successful in getting J to keep bows in her hair.  She really seemed to enjoy yanking them out, and while they look super cute, it's not a battle I ever wanted to fight.  However, now she loves having her hair in pigtails and always asks me for a "hair-tie" = )
  • One of the little girls I was a nanny for wouldn't keep a bow in her hair -- so I started using those teeny tiny rubberbands and putting a small ponytail in first and then clipping the bow through the ponytail holder and she couldn't pull it out.  She tried a couple of times (and I think it didn't feel very good) and she never touched it again.

That is a great idea. I think I will try that.

  • I use a headband and attach the bow since her hair is so fine right now...I can't wait till I can put the bow directly in.  So far she doesn't mess with them.
  • Grace is going through of those stages now.  She is gettting better.  I don't put a bow in her hair for daycare but other days I do.  When she would take it out I would just put it right back in and remind her she wasn't supposed to touch it.  Then she started taking it out and trying to put it back in.  Now, she doesn't take it out as much, but when she does I still put it right back in.  She is gradually getting better.
  • I haven't done this yet, but my nurse at L&D suggested KYJelly. lol. I know it sounds crazy, but she said that is what she used with both of her daughters and it worked like a charm. lol.

I so need to buy some bows for Samantha! :)

This does work for the teeny tiny bows that you put in newborns hair...so does toothpaste..that's what we used to do with Aubrey.
