gift suggestion for engagement party??

I have an engagement party this weekend and won't have time to go to store that they are registered at.  Do you ladies have any suggestions on gifts to give for an engagement?  I didn't have an engagement party and haven't been to one before so I don't know what types of gifts to give.

    I'm not sure, I didn't have one either.

    [::vent::] I feel like you shouldn't be expected to give a gift 3+ times for one wedding - the engagement party, shower, and actual wedding.

    A card and a bottle of wine would do it for me! cookbook? vase?

    Two of my favorite non-registry gifts were a gift basket full of stuff for a romantic night and then gourmet pancake mix and syrup for the morning after sort of thing.  The other was a gift card to a really nice restaurant like the Melting Pot, a place that we generally can't afford to go.
