Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Anyone's LO not been sick yet?

(knock on wood) but DD still has never been sick, other than a cold that had her congested for a few days but didn't seem to bother her. All my friends with babies seem like they're always going to the doctor for ear infections, one just had tubes put in her ears, and even stomach viruses. I only BF for a week, and was always told baby's have better immune systems when BF. Do you think it makes a difference whether a kid is at daycare, or home all day? We go out every day to the mall, grocery store, library, etc. where she is exposed to germs. Hmmm.

  • I always thought DS would get sick because we take him out every day, and have since we brought him home, but he hasn't (yet). If this jinxes me I'm going to be PISSED :)

  • Heh.  Yeah, don't want to jinx myself either, but DS has not even had a sniffle.  I am amazed cause DH and I both had swine flu back in November.

I know... I'm sorry. I hope this doesn't jinx me or anyone else. I seriously am interested though. Multiple times I've even brought DD to the elementary school I used to work at and the kids were coughing in her face and touching her even though I told them not to... nothing.

  • All kids get sick and it would be very naive to think your child will not.

With that said, Grace just got her first cold/ear infection this week. She is home with a nanny when I am at work and she goes to the grocery store, library, etc. with us. She is also EBF. Kids are not blank slates  though. Some kids have better immune systems than other regardless of how they are fed or where they spend their time

I had swine flu when I was pregnant, but the doctors assured me that it didn't mean that I, or DD, had built immunities. I think that might have something to do with her resilience.

I know eventually she'll get sick. I just am interested because it seems like babies get sick all the time, and she hasn't yet. I was wondering how many other people were in this boat, at this time, with their LO.

  • Is your LO in daycare?

My LO has not been sick yet.  There were a few days of congestion but nothing that was noticeable.

  • We thought DD was getting her first cold this week but it looks like it was just a reaction to her peas. We stopped peas and the symptoms stopped. So I don't think DD has been sick yet either. I was just thinking of making a post like this.

  • No sickness here yet.  She's not in daycare though, but I'm a teacher and come in contact with germy little kids.  I was sick for a week and thought for sure she'd get sick since I EBF, but nope!  She better not get sick now.  ;-)
  • So far no, and I hope it stays that way until I have built up some more PTO.  I've been back at work for about a month and DS is EBF, but I think we've just been lucky so far.  It probably helps that the only illness with any of the kids in DS's class in day care so far was a baby that had an ear infection the week that the center was closed b/c of all the snow here. His center is very strict about preventing the spread of germs too- you have to wear shoe covers and wash yours and the baby's hands first thing when you get there.
  • Avery got her first cold last week. Stuffy nose and a cough but no fever thank goodness. It lasted about 5 days and she was good as new. We had a pretty good run, lol.
  • DS also has never been sick. I SAH, but we do get out most days. Just lucky, I guess. :)
  • Knock on wood, no, DS has not yet been sick. And like PP said, we have been taking him out and about everywhere since about 5 days old. I SAH with him and he's not in daycare, adn I think it makes a huge difference. Everyone I know with a baby in daycare has already been sick multiple times by 5 months old. I think it's different than carting them around town because they are in a confined space with a bunch of other kids of all ages in some cases for an extended period of time. Even if older kids are in other rooms, the circulation system carries all kinds of germs etc through the air and when they are little they are so susceptible.

  • I already know he has my excellent immune system! DH had a wicked cold, and DS had a little congestion for, like a day. My poor friend's little son has already had an upper respiratory infection and pneumonia by 6 months... His 7 year old sister has been bringing home the goods from school :(
