Moms of BOYS 2 -3 year old: Re: Big Brother Gifts

So far I bought Nicholas the following to give to him when he comes to visit me in the hospital (mainly to keep him occupied in the room):

- A book about being a big brother

- a Tonka truck book set

- a Sponge Bob coloring book and crayons (he loves that stupid show!)

I want to get him something to give to him when I come home with the baby that he will love playing with so much it will keep him busy for hours on end.

What is your DS's absolute favorite toy that he plays with for long periods of time?  Right now Nicky's is a Black & Decker tool bench.

I'm thinking of maybe getting him this. Thoughts??? Ideas???

  • I really love all the ideas you have, especially the doctor set.

Currently, my 2 yr old godson is in love with his train set!  Seriously, he is obsessed with anything Thomas the Train.  SIL/BIL got him a train table for his bedroom with the train set.  He can probably sit there for hours on end just zipping the trains back and forth.  LOL He also is into painting / drawing.  They have an easel outside set up with a large drawing pad and markers and crayons, and he was playing with it all Sunday evening while I was there.  HTH

  • Aa loves his Buzz Lightyear that talks, and any games that have letters involved...oh and 24 piece puzzles. It takes him like a half hour to figure it out the first time and then after that about 5-10 minutes to repeat. I bought a bunch of puzzles from Target at $4-$5 each and then found some of the same at the Dollar Tree...they have Mikey, Nemo, and some other random ones there.
  • Oh that is a cute set! Mikey would be all over that. He's all into saying "Mommy go Ahhhhh" LOL I'm of no help though, Mikey can spend hours on end just coloring, he LOVES to color though.
  • We got Sebastian a bunch of thomas stuff! He was OBSESSED with that stupid train!!

Don't give him everything at once, I gave him one thing everytime he came and saw me!

Thanks Beth--you just reminded me that I want to get a few new puzzles for him as well!

V, this is what I plan to do as well!

  • Love your ideas! I need to start thinking about this too.

Quinn is completely obsessed with Handy Manny and he got the toolbox and tools for Christmas and plays with them EVERY DAY. Also, my hubby bought him a Mr. Potato Head to keep him entertained while he's been sick and he has been playing with that non-stop since he got it on Friday.

    Have fun shopping!

  • is it bad that I have no intention on buying the boys anything this time around, they've got eachother to keep busy with, why would they need toys-lol

I probably will end up buying them something regardless ;)

  • DS loves cleaning supplies (the toys ones of course) and my friend got this awesome cleaning cart with all kinds of supplies (brooms, vacuum, sprays, it pretty much has everything that real cleaning carts do) so if I would have to choose today that's what i would get. I am not that far along so I haven't thought about it too much.

    Easels are awesome!

  • Dinosaurs and monsters are current favorites in our house for Cedric.  Also, trains and train tracks.  They take a while to put together and play with.  Anything Spiderman or Batman.  And tools.  He prefers real power tools, but he'll settle for his toy stuff if he has to.  He also very much enjoys the Leap Frog toys that Graciela got for Christmas!
  • Lucas loves his basketball net, t-ball and all his sport stuff. Legos and blocks. Both Lucas and Sofia LOVE Melissa and Doug kitchen stuff. They have a pizza set, bday cake and cookies. The set comes with serving utensils and they use their tea set with it.

They also like to play dress up.

I think the train table is a great idea. Especially since you plan on giving him things a little at a time. You can give him more tracks or a train everyday.

  • IDK if this helps, but my godson loves dinosaurs!  I guess it depends on what he likes.  Everything you've chosen is really great!  I, especially, love the book on being an older brother.  How about tees that say, "I'm a big brother,"  or something like that.
  • Awww! This is a great idea, Andrea!!!! I have no input on what boys like and I think the girls gave you some great ideas but wanted to say - AWWW! Such a smart mommy. :)

  • When I was PG with Chelsea a friend gave me the same tip - get the older sibling a gift from the new baby and give to them at the hospital.  I had gotten Eli toy cars the first time around and a puzzle/book combo the second time around. I had gotten Chelsea a baby animal/furry book.  This is such a great thing to do.  Everyone has already given you some great ideas.  Another idea - get him a shirt that says,"I'm a big brother."  It is super cute...if you're not sure where to get them, Baptist and South Miami hospitals' gift shops both carry them (not sure if that's we're you're delivering.)

  • Baby Nicolas gave BIG BROTHER MARIO a digital camera to take pictures of the new baby...new pajamas like baby...and a shirt that said BIG BROTHER to wear to the hospital...Mario did go with my mom to the gift shop to pick up balloons for me and the baby before he arrived to visit me in labor.

Although Mario was in the delivery room when NICOLAs was born. He had his favorite thomas the train take along set to play with while i was in labor.

it kept him busy for hours.

Mario fell so much in love with his baby he wanted to "nurse" him for me..once I said Oh i thnk the baby is hungry...

    HTH...good luck.....
