How many times per day does your LO nurse?

(also posted on BF board)

DS is just over 5 months. I would say he pretty consistently nurses 7 times in a 24 hour period. When he goes more like 3.5-4 hours between day feedings my supply seems great. However in the evenings when he might eat more like 2.5-3 hours apart, I worry that it won't be enough.

I work 3 days per week and have to pump twice during the day when I work. (I am home for his noon feeding) I am only pumping about 5 oz which is down. I was pumping more like 8. Should I be concerned? I have never really had supply issues. In the last 2 weeks, I have only been feeding DS once during the night & once in the early morning which is down from 3 feedings per night. Since then, I have noticed the decrease. I really hope everything is okay because I want to nurse for at least the first year if not more.

Thanks ladies!

Re: How many times per day does your LO nurse?

  • DD nurses every 3 hours except for at night which is a seven hour stretch.  I am pretty sure that during the evening hours milk supply tends to be lower at least that is how it is in my case and then I am forced to supplement with formula.  your lo will let you know if he is still hungry and not satisfied :)

  • In the last week, DD has started STTN and consolidating her naps, both which cut out feedings. She's now nursing 5 times a day.

You could be producing less because of pumping. Pumping isn't as efficient as baby BF so if you're consistently draining less from your boobs, you'll start making less. So maybe that's what's going on w/ you pumping less now? You could try taking Fenugreek and see if that helps up the oz you pump. Or try adding in a pumping session if you can find the time. If you've been pumping for a while, then I don't know what would be causing the dip.. I wouldn't think that cutting out night feedings would make a difference, it shouldn't at least.

Have you been sick, had a cold, stressed, not drinking as much water? All that could effect your supply too.

  • DD is also just over 5 months and she still nurses 6 times/day. With about 3-4 hours in between, sometimes it's only 2. Not all of them are long feedings though, they usually range from 8-15min during the day and her last feeding before bed is like 30min. She STTN for the most part, and usually sleeps from 8:30-4 or 5 before waking.

It's probably the pumping that is affecting your supply since pumping isn't as efficient as BFing. Maybe you could try pumping more often like someone else said, that might help maintain your supply more. I heard that your supply is lowest in the evening anyway so that might be why too.
