Babies: 3 - 6 Months

slight flat spot on head

I noticed this about a month ago. I brought it up to the Ped and he said that I should be keeping LO on his tummy almost all day. Umm, no. LO will only last 10 min at a time on his belly.

We have been hyper-vigilent about his head. We use the Bjorn around the house or at the mall (instead of his snap n go). We try to do a lot of tummy time. We switch his head at night (which direction he is facing). I really try to limit his time in his swing, bouncy seat and car seat.

Is this something that will improve once he can sit up? Ped wasn't even concerned and I think its because they do not get aggressive with flat heads until 4 months...

  • DS was the same way, and still kind of is about being on his tummy for long periods of time. I used a mirror and placed it in front of him, which helped a little bit. Have you tried putting him in a jumperoo or an exersaucer?

  • My DS has a slight flat spot on the back of his head and our pedi, at his 4month appt, was not really concerened since it was such a mild mild case. He just lots of tummy time and sitting (our LO tripods). He checked his soft spot and said it was still very open which is good b/c hopefully once LO starts sitting up all the time it will round back out. He said we would keep reassesing(sp?).  FWIW my niece and nephew both had flat spots but once they started sitting up on their own they rounded back out.

The mirror is a great idea! Thanks!

We have a jumperoo and exersaucer but I thought it was too early to try. DS's head is still wobbly.

  • Do you have a bumbo seat? This really helped with DS's flat head. Also our pedi gave us neck stretches to do every diaper change and that made a big difference.
