cream cheese question

so l've looked at all the lists.  and i'm supposed to avoid soft cheese, i get that.  but cream cheese isn't on the list.  but it's a soft cheese.  and then i googled and wiki-ed it and it says it's not like other soft cheeses, but i am still not seeing if it's pasteurized or safe.

it's not like i eat a ton of it, but i ate two wontons yesterday with it, deepfried. mmmm.  are those the last two i get for the next 8 months or what?

Re: cream cheese question

  • I don't really consider cream cheese a cheese. I've been eating the stuff all week.

  • No, you're fine.  Cream cheese is pasteurized and okay to eat.

    Yum.  Bagels and Lox.

Why is salmon not ok?  I thought Salmon was on the safe list.

eta:  ok, so Lox are a no-go because its smoked salmon, but cooked salmon is still ok.  Phew.

Man.  Now I really want Bagels and Lox.

  • i'm probably confusing you with two different things.

cream cheese wontons are from pick up stix, or any other fast food chinese place you can find them.  Pick up stix is a chain but i don't know if it's national.  i'm in CA.

i also like smoked salmon on a bagel with cream cheese, capers, onions, etc., and i can't have that now because  of the salmon, but i can have the cream cheese on a bagel if i want.

  • Cream cheese isn't a true soft cheese. And soft cheeses are fine as long as they are pasteurized which around me unless you go to Whole Foods or Fresh Market you do not find raw milk or unpast. cheeses in the regular grocery store.

  • Cream cheese is definitely safe.  I consume enough to keep the Philadelphia cream cheese company in business!
  • Like others have said, you are good.  I am having this for dinner tonight.  Can't wait!!  I love cream cheese!

But wait a second! Lox is smoked salmon right.. So it is cooked, isn't it? Because "smoking" it is a type of cooking, right?

  • Soft cheeses (ALL of them) are perfectly safe as long as they are pasteurized. It is next to impossible to find ones that are unpasteurized in the US unless you are some really fancy cheese shop.  Anything you can buy from a regular grocery store is ok.

My doc said any cooked meat is okay, but if it's only been "smoked" that's a no-no.

  • thanks ladies --- I now want a bagel w cream cheese SO badly... maybe I'll ask DH to put one up on his way home (I'm alraedy home from work)Stick out tongue
  • if you're worried, look at the label on the package. in the ingredients mine says "pasteurized milk". i think most products that aren't pasteurized are labeled "raw"... i see raw cheeses at the store all the time.

  • I've been eating it constantly. As long as it's pasteurized it's fine (same with the other cheeses on the list.) Most cheese in the US are pasteurized.

  • Any soft cheeses that are pasteurized are fine. Generally anything you find in the yogurt/ricotta/cottage/string cheese section is pasteurized. It's when you go over to the individual pieces of cheese that come from a variety of different places and countries that you have to start checking for pasteurization. If it doesn't say pasteurized on the front, you can look at the ingredients, pasteurized cheeses usually list "pasteurized milk" etc.
