My parents do. It's pricey but for them, it's the only option as they both own their own businesses (small ones) and b/c my father had prostate cancer about 5 years ago.
My mother is 52, and it were just her, it would be relatively cheap as she has no real health issues, but w/ my dad's cancer, it's a bit more of an issue. Kids are cheap, at least they have been for her, as she had my brothers on this insurance for awhile too when they were still her dependents. The coverage is okay, I think, but again, their options were limited w/ my dad's cancer.
They went through an insurance agent they know, so I don't really have any advice on how to find it yourself (although I imagine it's pretty easy).

We had private health insurance when I was a SAHM with my first daughter, got on a group plan when I went back to work, and getting ready to get back on a private plan since I am resigning from my position to stay home again.
There's a lot of options for private health insurance. I'd recommend writing down your needs: how much deductible would you like to have, what would you like your co-pays to be, what max out of pocket do you want, etc and then call a broker. They can help you sort out your list of wants with what is truly reasonable and quote you from different agencies. We've always gotten the best deals from Anthem.
Keep in mind that things like maternity are NOT covered unless you purchase an additional rider that is usually $$$$. And some plans require a waiting period even after you purchase the rider so if you want to get pregnant soon that's an important consideration. Also keep in mind that many private policies DO NOT cover well baby care. That was a must have for us as I did not want to pay for vaccines out of pocket so make sure you check that for the plan you pick. Also be careful of their prescription plans because many private policies skimp on Rx's.
Also, the prices initially are usually not that bad. The trick is that the raise the rates astronomically for each additional year that you use the plan. The first time we were on a private plan we were paying about $400 a month for the 3 of us. By our second year, they had risen our rates to about $700 a month. Luckily for us, I should be back at work around our second year this time so we should be able to get out of the private plan before the price skyrockets.

This is true I looked at a plan through Costco & it looked pretty good & had our works broker look at it & he saw in the fine print that they only covered up to like $500 total for the year on RX

Was your dh offered the job?! I do not have private insurance, but I hadn't seen an update.
Did anything happen with your house?
