Is it that rare for your water to break

Everyone always says this and I don't think its that rare.  Me, SIL,my cousin, and my best friend all had their water break before they got to the hospital.  Im just curious what others think??

Re: Is it that rare for your water to break

  • My water breaking was my first sign of labor with my first 2.

I had to be induced @ 37w with #3 due to pre-e, but my water broke on it's on then as well.

  • I don't know but I was told by my Bradley instructor that only like 5% of women have their water break on their own or as the first sign of labor.
  • From what I've read it's about 10% of the population that experience their water breaking on it's own.

  • My doctor said it's rare- the books say less than 10-15% of women, but in my experience as well it's been more than that.
  • I've never actually known anyone who's water DID break on its own...

  • I have heard it's pretty uncommon.  A quick Google search says that less than 20% of women experience this before labor starts.
  • My OB broke mine when I was 6cm dilated.  Only a few of my friends have had their water break on it's own.

  • 10% of women.  That's it.

  • I am on pregnancy #3 and my water broke with my first two babies.  I had to go to the hospital to have my contractions start.
  • My water broke while I was sleeping 1:30 am at 39 weeks 2 days.  I had no contractions prior to going to bed or all day previous.
  • They had to break my water at the hospital when I was pregnant with Zachary.  I kind of hope it breaks on its own this time, even if I'm already in labor.
  • Lol @ all the different percentages in this post. :)

Regardless, they're all somewhere around 10-20%, which means your water probably won't break before you get to the hospital.

  • To me it doesn't seem like it, but I don't think of 10% as rare

  • My water breaking was the first sign of labor with DD, as well as for my sister, and my mom. with their firsts anyways. It would be nice if it happened again this time, but i already have contractions on and off.
  • Yeah, we heard 13% have water break as the first sign of labor.. But I know 3 people who have had babies recently, and ALL had their water break first. So I'm beginning to doubt that it's that rare! However, my mom and my MIL both swear that their water didn't break at all until the very end of their labor, for all their kids...

  • I manage no statistics, but my sister's water broke with both her babies before she even knew she was in labor.

  • I wouldn't say it's rare, but it's definitely less common.

Last time, mine did break on its own, but I was already in my hospital bed by then getting settled in before my induction started.

  • Just because you know people who had their water break doesn't mean the stats are wrong.

Heck, in my circle there are now 7 women pregnant. All 7 are having girls. Does this mean that the real stats for sex are that all babies are girls? Of course not.

  • In my birthing class on Sunday, the doula said that 11% of women have their water break on their own.

And then one of my classmate's water broke.
