Do you have a vegetable garden?

I want to start a simple one w/ DD but I feel overwhelmed with how and what... any tips for me?

I think I want to just do it in planters on the deck. We have WAY too much wildlife around here do find a spot in the yard w/out a ton of work to keep deer, squirrels, raccoons, etc.. out. Seriously, there's a pack/herd/what do you call them of 15ish deer who practically live in our backyard and come right up to the house to eat my rose bushes! AngryWink

Re: Do you have a vegetable garden?

  • We're going to have our first one this year. We're doing two raised beds. I like the book Square Foot Gardening. I think you could probably take the same principle (soil mixture info, seed starting info, etc) and do it even if you did containers instead of rasied beds. I got my seeds started a few weeks ago and have already had to transplant them to larger pots. I'm super excited to see how this goes :)

Oh...and the deer WILL eat your garden...they are ruthless.

  • Definately start with tomatoes and basil.

  • yes, i guess.

we went to home depot last year and bought little pots of zucchini, tomatoes, herbs and... something else. We stuck them in the ground and watered when we remembered. It was great fun!

obviously I don't have a green thumb, but ANYONE can grow zucchini.

  • I'm fully intending on starting one this year.  In fact I was just looking at a seed catalog a few minutes ago.  I think planters on the deck would be a good foray into the world of gardening.  I was thinking of ordering this strawberry kit.  I also want to grow bell peppers and Japanese eggplants.  Grow whatever your favorite veggies are!

  • That's great!  We have a pretty big vegetable garden in our backyard in summer.  Dh mostly keeps it up though.  We do tomatoes, green peppers, red peppers, zucchini (they take up lots of space though), onions, leeks, and beets.  I think tomatoes are relatively easy for starting and good for a planter, you just have to keep them watered well and watch them every day for picking.  Peppers are not too hard but they don't get a whole lot of peppers per plant, and they'd probably do ok in a planter; zucchini is easy if you have the space for it (I wouldn't do it in a planter!).

We also have deer here and we have a high fence around the garden.  We just put it up last year because in past years they have ALWAYS been in the garden.  Rabbits too.  So it keeps them all out!  There is this really gross concontion of raw eggs, cayenne pepper, and maybe 2 other things that is supposed to keep deer away, but it smells terrible!  We used that in past years (and thankfully our garden is really far away from the house) but I think the fence works much better!

  • We just planted a bunch of tomatoes, brussel sprouts, radishes, romaine and a dwarf orange tree in pots in our backyard (in pots because of our dog who would LOVE the buffet, not deer!).  I read somewhere that pretty much anything you grow in the ground, you can grow in a pot.  Oh!  Just ate my first strawberry off our growing plant this morning!  It was delish!!
