Toddlers: 24 Months+

Sooo... mommys with babies...

When I took Sydnee for her 9 month appointment a few weeks ago our pedi told me that there is no longer a concern for things like peanut butter, strawberries, eggs.  She said there is new research that proves there's no point in waiting!  Soo, I (being the horrible mom that I am) have given her all of those things!  She LOVES pb on bread, and strawberries.  We don't do eggs often so I haven't tried those.  Just wanted to spread the word!

(I will admit, it would be really scary to have an infant have a reaction, but since no one in our family has any issues I didn't worry about it.)

  • The only thing she said to wait on was honey.

  • Interesting. I will have to talk with my pedi about it on Monday and see what she has to say.  I haven't done any food with C yet, other then purees and I have given her a few small pieces of bread.

  • obviously we haven't started w/ DD2 yet, but I have heard and read that new recommendations say it's better to start PB BEFORE age 1 as long as there's no family history of allergies.

So weird how fast things change! It's hard to adjust your mindset, especially when it's so soon after DC1 ;) When did you start solids for your DDs? DD2 in particular? I know w/ DD1 it was 6 months, now 4-6? I don't know... wait or don't wait??

  • Funny.  My sister took her DD to her 9 month visit last week, and our pedi gave her the okay for eggs too!  So my sis took her to brunch right after the appointment and let her have a bite of her eggs.  Ha ha.  She didn't waste any time.

The pedi also said something to the effect of - since we don't have a history of egg problems and her 4yo DS doesn't have issues with it, it was alright.

  • How new is this?  I haven't heard it....

We're close enough to 12mo anyway that I'm just going to keep waiting.  :)

  • I guess that's good because my dd had eggs, pb & strawberries before 1. My mom used to dip my paci in honey!

  • I thought that the biggest concern with PB was that it's a choking hazard.

  • I've been doing a lot of research on this too.  DD#1 we were told to hold off on egg yolk until 9 months, whites until 12 months.  I actually tried egg yolk today (7 months, 2.5 weeks).  I keep a syringe of benedryl nearby just in case, but it was fine.  For DD#1 I was told to hold off on PB until 18 months, and tried it at 18 months and she had a pretty fast reaction to it (thank goodness for my paranoia and syringe of benedryl) so regardless of the research will hold off on that for the twins.

I am baffled by the whole peanut thing- in India, a peanut paste is a first food!  Maybe they're on to something!

  • Just read an article about that the other day- going to ask our pedi about starting to introduce solids at more like 4 months.
