DH is turning the big 4-0 later this month. Yes, we're old (I'm 36). We're having a party (not a surprise) and I'm in charge of planning. I'm considering a costume party (dress as movie characters) b/c DH loves movies and Halloween). I'm also considering everyone dress in 70's clothes since that's when he was born. I've also toyed with telling DH it's a costume party and surprise him by having everyone else show up dressed as elderly people (to make him feel young). I'm making a 3-tiered cake with black fondant and silver 40's on it. Which party ideas do you like? Any other ideas/thoughts would be appreciated!ps one of our neighbors just turned 40 and someone put 40 black plastic flamingos in his yard. . .it was hilarious!

Re: repost from NC board: 40th birthday party ideas
I love the black flamingos. Love the cake.
Maybe check on how difficult it would be to get costumes this time of year before doing a costume party, but otherwise, I say everyone dress elderly, him dress in 70's attire.
If you're worried about costumes this time of year, check with your local college's theatre department. Our local college theatre department rents out costumes for a really reasonable price. Just a thought.
Love your ideas but I really like the one of the guests dressing as the elderly and your DH being the "young" one!
