I have no problem with used stuff, however with shoes I think the problem with them is that they conform to the a childs foot usually so if your child puts their foot in after it may not fit properly or at least be comfortable for them.

We only buy one good pair of SRs per season (that she wears 90% of the time) and then supplement with less expensive pairs as we go along so it's not really an issue for us right now BUT MIL also turns her nose up at it. Says it's "gross" and that the original toddler's foot impression is "in there now" so makes it hard for the new toddler's feet to truly fit.
I've been thinking about this one. For the most part, I think I won't buy used shoes. However, for special occassion shoes that are in good shape and obviously the previous owner and my DDs wouldn't wear much, I might consider it.

Revolting. I wouldn't wear used shoes, why would it be ok for my child? She gets two pairs of Stride Rites every 3-4 months and she wears them exclusively. When she's done, I give them to Goodwill.

revolting? really? why?
so, somebody else can buy your used shoes from goodwill and it's okay for them, but "revolting" for you?

That's a pretty strong reaction to shoes. But ok, a nay then?
Most of DS' shoes are used or hand-me-downs. We have a consignment store near us and I have found some See Kai Run shoes that are barely worn for $10. When they grow out of them so fast I have no problem saving money on barely used shoes.
When I borrow my sister's shoes to step outside quickly--their foot impression have molded into the shoe. I think this happens with kids shoes as well. If it's a "used" shoe that's only been worn 1-2 times and it hasn't been molded and it's "like new" then I'm ok with it. If it's in good shape but was worn a lot, I don't. I just threw away DS's everyday shoes that he outgrew. Although they didn't look that bad, I want a proper fit for the second child (or to give away for another child).
I won't do it, not because it's gross, but wearing used shoes is really bad for foot development. I buy one pair of Stride Rites that last him 3-4 months, he wears them everyday. The only time he's ever worn used is for a wedding he was in where he had a pair of saddle shoes, he wore them for 3 hours, that's not going to hurt his foot development.
In good condition = yay. We have a few from my nephew that DS has worn or will wear. I haven't found any that look like they're in good enough condition at our consignment sales, so I mostly have to buy new.
DD has a few pairs from a family friend & my niece for her to wear that are in great condition. But other than that, I usually just go to Target & pick up some shoes. I have bought Stride Rite in the past, but DH doesn't see the point in spending that much when she grows out of her shoes so fast at this point in her life.
I only say no because of the way shoes mold to your feet. I have weird giant big toes so I know that if I tried to wear someone's old shoes it would feel all funny trying to fit into their footbed impression, so I assume it might be the same for DS?
But I don't put him in different shoes to match different outfits. I invest in 1 or 2 new pairs per size, and that's all he wears.

Wait, what? It's 'revolting' for you and your kids ... but its ok for other people to buy them from Goodwill????
Used from a friend or relative is fine with me. Purchased at a yard sale or from someone you don't know? No thanks.
Same. We have three boxes of hand-me-down shoes from DH's three-year-old cuz. A lot of them seem barely worn, and they are a very clean family, so I have no problems with reusing.
I think you can tell by the look of a used shoe if it is "revolting" or not. If there is a nasty blackened, caked-down footprint and the outside is all torn up, then I say no. If they look only slightly worn, then why not. It's good to reuse and recycle when you can.

This is my take on it as well.
Right. I wouldn't buy a pair of crusty-azz shoes anyway... Given how little wear/use DD gets out of the shoes she has, I would expect similar quality from whatever I purchased.
Yay if they're hand-me downs from someone we know. Truthfully, though, most the hand-me downs we've gotten have been pretty "worn" so DD hasn't worn them much herself. We've done what some PPs have done - buy one pair of Stride Rites and the rest of her shoes are from Target or elsewhere inexpensive.
Pssh. I buy used shoes for DS on eBay all the time! New Stride Rites that he'll wear for three months? No way I'm paying full price! I've found some that are NWT or close to it for $10 or less WITH shipping.

How is that revolting? The shoes I buy for DD look brand new. There isn't toe cheese falling out of them or anything like that, so how can it be revolting?

I don't know how I feel about it yet.

I'm with Totty in most of DD's shoes are used. You can find many pairs of "used" shoes that were never used or used like once or twice.
Ok here is my deal with used shoes:
If the kid actually wears them then they are going to be trashed and therefore not able to be sold to me.
So, I buy used shoes because I know they were maybe worn 2 times by the previous kid.

::Snickering out loud:: Who knew I was setting my kid up for a gimpy legged future cause I buy him used shoes!? Running off to save his soles!
Yep, about 90% of the shoes Anna owns are used! I bought 5 pairs from OUAC for about $10. Can't beat that!
Now she's out grown them all, and the shoes they have there are ugly. I don't know what to do!
