How much milk does your 20 month old - ish drink?

She's kind of on a milk strike.  We had to replace the spouts on her Born Free trainer bottles and now she will barely drink milk at all - going on 4 or 5 days now - unless we get lucky or, like this morning, in desperation, I put low sugar Quik in it!

Do you still heat up their milk at this age?  Basically, what are your routines with milk post-18 months?

TIA.

Re: How much milk does your 20 month old - ish drink?

  • My son drinks 20 oz a day, give or take a few ounces, but he LOVES milk. I offer (3) 5 oz sippies during the day and (1) 6oz bottle at night.Until he was 15 months, he was drinking 40 oz a day + 3 meals + 3 snacks! We had to put some effort into cutting it down (he just eats more snacks, usually 5 or 6 a day). He only likes the Born Free cups, too. If your DD is eating enough and getting enough calcium, I wouldn't worry too much about it, unless she has other stuff going on (sometimes if they have an ear infection, drinking is uncomfortable).

I give him cold milk (I have since he was a year).

  • At 20 months, DD was drinking 20+ oz. of milk a day. It's still about the same now.  She gets water or water/juice the rest of the day.  We haven't ever heated her milk. She has also drunk from a straw sippy since 1 year when we dropped the bottles.  Maybe those might work.  DD never liked sippy cups.

ugh, i've totally created a monster.  she use the straw cups for juice and water but i stuck with the warmed milk in the Born Free cups for that specifically.....now i'm screwed!  i tried giving her the milk in a straw cup today and she wouldn't even take a sip.

she is a really good eater so i am not too worried....but i do want her drinking more.

she doesn't have an ear infection - we've had 4 this winter and unfortunately i know the symptoms of those all too well.

  • DD is almost 17 months and she drinks 2-3 sippy cups a day of milk, I don't know how many oz but our doctor said to give her around that much.  She drinks a lot of water and she only drinks cold milk.  I'm hoping that she will transition to skim milk after her second birthday since that's what we drink.  We alternate between sippy cups and cups with straws.
  • My son is 18 months and drinks about 16 oz of milk a day (2 sippies).  Some days he loves his milk and other days he has little interest.  I wouldn't worry if your daughter is on a milk strike, as long as she is getting enough calcium from other sources.

    I never heated his milk.

  • DD is 16mo old and some days she'll drink 2-2.5 cups and some days she'll barely drink a cup. If I really worry about her drinking enough, I'll warm it up, she tends to drink more milk if it's warm. But she can take it cold too. She only drinks out of straw cups. Our cups are about 8oz each. At her 15-mo appt, pedi said she needs to drink 16-24oz so she's on target most days.

FWIW, she never took in much BM, but she grew and developed normally. Pedi said "babies will suck out all the nutrients they need" even if they take in less than what's 'average.'

  • thanks guys.  she eats like a horse so i'm not too worried, plus she's doing great growth wise.  i guess i can look at this as an opportunity to lose the warmed milk and break her of that habit i've created!
  • DS would drink milk all day if I let him, but I limit him to 16-24 oz a day (generally 16 oz).  If I give him more than that, he stops eating real food.

Does she eat yogurt?  Cheese?  If she doesn't drink enough milk, just get her the calcium and protein through other things.

yeah, she LOVES cheese and yogurt, so i'm good there.  she used to love drinking the milk though and drank 16 oz uneventfully until this bottle issue.
