Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Has anybody NOT done professional pics?

I have a nephew who is 6 mos older than Jackson. MY BIL and SIL seem to get professional pictures done every time their son farts (sorry I'm a little bitter) and send out cards they get done through shutterfly or some place like that. DH's family ALWAYS asks us when they are going to get cute "posed" photos of Jackson in the mail?

I think the photos we take are adorable. I do not have the money to have pictures taken and then send out photo cards 50 times a year. That is so damn irritating!!!

  • we haven't- but i take my own & i think theyr'e pretty good!

  • I havent. None. I wish i could afford it!
  • We have not.  We have a great camera and have captured a lot of great shots of DS with it, so we don't see the need.  We would, however, like a few shots of us as a family - which is difficult because we have no family or friends in the area.  We are going to get some pro pics of the three of us, but only because we have no other choice.

  • We hadn't until last night (and it was a COMPLETE diaster. We actually rebooked for Sunday because DD was so cranky.) The only reason I am doing them now is because we got gift certficates to have them done from MIL's coworkers so I feel obligated.

I do regret not getting them done when she was a newborn, but I don't think I need to have prof pics done every month.

  • No.  I use my own camera :)  Its cheaper and we got some good shots.
  • We're going for the first time this afternoon.  It's a trial run.  If I'm not pleased with the outcome, I'll go back to taking my own.

  • we haven't.

we take a LOT of pictures & I don't see the point in spending the crazy amount of money that most places ask for.

  • No, we haven't. My in-laws bought us a photo package for Christmas, because they'd like a set of posed shots. But we haven't done it yet.

  • I have had prof pics done once and she was 6 weeks old.  I got them only because the photographer was just starting out and needed models so the price was right (free) with us just having to pay for pics.  I am getting 6 month pics done and probably 1 year pics but that is it.  I love my pics that i take too.  Your BIL and SIL sound like my BIL and SIL.  Mine sent out cutesy ultrasounds pics that said "coming soon..." which i thought was strange.

Your son is precious!  How about print out one of your great pics on photo paper and mail it out?  Edit it on picnik or something and you can pose him yourself :) that might shut em up at least for a little while!

  • We took newborn photos of her and I dont regret it one bit.  They are great!  But since then, I have been taking them myself, as I am getting more interested in photography.  I think the jcpenneys, sears, ect ones are cheesy sometimes, so I would rather learn to do them myself!  :)  Don't feel bad, we dont have the money to get photocards done at the drop of a hat either and if you like your photos, just send them those.  They are grandparents, I am sure they will love them.  Pro or not!

  • Only reason I got her newborn shots done was cuz it was done for free. Otherwise, I wouldn't've bothered. I do go to photo studios on a fairly regular basis, but I always go for the cheapest option possible ($7.99 package... free montage... free 8x10... whatever I have a coupon for), and because I loved how good the first photo shoot went at sears, I convinced DH to get the SuperSaver card, and I'm getting all her "monthly" shots done with that (which gives me a free 8x10 any time I go, and no sitting fees)... I'm not good at taking pics myself, so I don't mind going to the portrait studio, especially when it's free. (Well, okay, there's the initial $45 payout for the membership, but it's only $5 to renew it, and I'd have to pay $5 every time I want to print out an 8x10 at walmart, so why not just have them do it for me??? and it's better quality, anyway!)
  • We had photos taken at jcpenny when DS was 2 months, the only "professional" pics we have had taken.....they suck, big time. The ones we take our sooooooo much better! I might try again somewhere else at 6 months, we shall see.

I dont think pro pics are a big deal, and certainly not necessary.

  • We haven't and I really don't intend to anytime soon.  We take our own pictures at each month--both with the stickypickys and also just general ones.  I have photoshop elements and I can make them turn out pretty good looking.  The point of the pics, IMO is to capture your child at different points in their life.  If you are happy with the pics you have then why pay someone to do it?

I have really wanted to send out valentines or other cards and have not had the time to do it.  If you were interested, you could always design a card using a photo program (Picasa or photobucket work if you dont have PSE or digiscrap skills) wait for a sale at walgreens on 10 cent prints and send out some cards.

I think I want to do Easter cards and thats how I will do them!

  • None yet.  DH bought a new camera right before the LO was born.  So Daddy is the official, "OMG, he's farting, take a picture" photographer.  Might get professional pics when he can sit up on his own.

  • We haven't because my MIL is an excellent photographer, so whenever she's around she takes tons of pics!
  • We have not done any professional photos yet of Katelyn. I might call up a girl who's been doing them for some friends of mine (they turn out OK), but we'll see. I've been taking tons of photos and I like to think that they turn out pretty good. We do mini photo shoots every once in a while for the special occasions (Christmas, Valentine's Day, 1 month, 2 month, etc.) and send those pics out to the immediate family.

  • We haven't done any yet. We're planning to next month though when DD is 6 months. We were going to do it earlier but we just haven't had the chance. We're going to get some of her and some of all of us, we don't have any family pics yet. We do take lots of our own pics though!!

  • We haven't had any done. I do regret not doing prof pics when DD was a newborn, but we just don't have that kind of money. I looked into a bunch and they're all pretty much the same in price. Even for Sears, JCPenney, etc..still a couple hundred dollars. But, I will be looking into it again for when she turns 1..I plan on using a birthday cake photo of her for the invitations. Got 6 months to save!

  • We haven't yet - keep meaning to and then wondering what age is best and then another few weeks flies by :) I've taken a ton - some good, some not so much. Have heard that the JCP nearest us has a great photographer, so may try them soon, although I know at some point I will break down and have our wedding photogs do some since they are awesome!
  • We haven't. We got a gift card to Picture People for Christmas but we probably wont use until maybe his 6 month pics. Until then I am fine taking them myself. I'm getting into photography, so I like playing around with him and getting shots. We have "photo shoots" while daddy is at work! So far I'm happy with what I've taken.
  • We don't either.  A friend of mine is a professional photographer and was hoping she would offer some discount rates possibly, but so far nothing.  We just can't afford them, or else we might think about it.
  • We haven't. My mom wants some done, though. I think we're going to have them done when I'm staying with her while DH is deployed. DD will probably be a year old.
  • Nope, we can't afford it. Regular pictures are just fine for me! And OP, I think DS is adorable anyway! Especially in your siggy picture, it doesn't have to be professional. It's not the picture, it's the baby!

  • yep

plus I keep thinking I could do an awesome job myself.

  • We haven't done any professional pictures.    We actually still have a photoshoot left over with our genius wedding photog that I haven't used yet, so I might use it for Dee and my nieces together so my parents have some nice pics....but yeah, otherwise I would NEVER shell out the cash on photos.

Instead we invested in upgrading our DSLR and getting a 50mm lens.

  • We haven't yet.  I wanted to wait until she became more interactive and able to sit up on her own...she's just now starting to respond to us with smiles and little giggles, so maybe in the next month or two we'll go in for ONE studio session.

My dad is also a possible (free) option since he's a sports photographer. He doesn't really have any studio equipment except for a couple reflectors left over from my prom days, but he does have a couple nice canon cameras with different lenses.

We bought a little Canon Rebel and have taken our own posed shots so far...

  • We have our first prof. photo session in a few weeks!  We wanted to wait until DS could sit up on his own.  I've taken thousands of pictures of him with my SLR so I have plenty of good quality pics of so far.
  • Not a one!  DH is quite the amateur photog though so I think we have a lot of great photos of him.
  • I take my own pictures and I like them better than most of the entry-level professional photographs I see. But:

I do regret not getting them done when she was a newborn, but I don't think I need to have prof pics done every month.

I too have this regret. I planned to do my own newborn shots, but Zack was a difficult baby and I was too overwhelmed adjusting to having a baby. I think that was the one time I should have paid someone else to take his pictures.

  • We had them taken once. We went with a group of other babies and it was free. I didn't like the pictures and didn't order any. I have LOVED the pictures I take though. We bought a really nice camera before he was born so we could take our own instead of getting professional pictures taken.
  • We haven't had any pro pics done.  Just our own.  :)
  • We thought about hiring a professional but instead used the money on upgrading cameras and lighting equipment.  I think DH does a great job.  In fact, I think his pictures look professional.

  • We haven't done it yet, but we're planning to take him in the next couple of weeks to Portrait Innovations. We just have a regular digital camera and have lots of snapshots, but I would like for the grandparents to have something to display that's still cute, but looks a bit more professional.
