Vacationing in Miami - ideas?

Hi ladies, I'm sorry to bother you here, I'm sure you get these questions all the time! We are going to be in Miami in about 2 1/2 weeks for a conference for DH's work. We are staying at Fontainebleau if that helps with the location we will be in.

We will only be there for three nights, but we have a lot of free time while we're there including one whole free day. I was wondering if there is anything you would recommend doing while we're there. Also, any good restaurants we should go to? Will the weather be warm enough for swimming? I would really like to sit at the pool and have an adult beverage but guess I'll have to fake that part! :) Any tips you could give me would be very helpful. Thanks ladies!

  • Nothing wrong with virgin pina coladas!

As for the weather, it has been a bit chilly lately, I guess chilly for us Miamians (in the 50s-60s), so not sure if warm enough to swim.  If it gets in the 70s-80s, maybe you can take advantage.  FYI - Fountainblue is on 41st Street.

Lincoln Road (pedestrian street - 17th Street) has a lot to offer... lots of fun.  They have a ton of restaurants, shops, and even a movie theater and a bowling alley to hang out at.  It is easily a cab drive away.  Nexxt has good food... it is similar to Cheesecake Factory.  I'd def recommend sitting outside near the "street" to be able to people watch... loads of fun.  LOL  Rancho Grande (Mexican) is very good too.

Las Vegas Cuban Cuisine offers decent Cuban food, which is something more authentic to Miami if you want to try it out.  There is one restaurant on 69th Street.

Big Pink on South Beach is also offers awesome food.  It is a very causal place, with family sized portions... very eclectic.

  • The hotel you're staying in has amazing restaurants and a beautiful pool to lounge by! Hopefully the weather will be warm but it has been a little chilly lately. In Miami, there's no telling how the weather will be though, hopefully you'll luck out!

Lincoln Road has great restaurants and shopping, and is just great to walk in.

The Fontainebleau isn't really walking distance to Lincoln Road or "the heart" of South Beach (which is Ocean and 8th street more or less). But I would also recommend that you go to Ocean Drive and eat in Mango's Tropical Cafe (for some Cuban cuisine and something that's more Miami).

    Have fun!!:)

  • Another recommendation for Cuban food is Lario's on Ocean Dr and 8th Street... it is owned by Gloria Estefan.  Far from hotel, so cab required.

Mango's has good food, and I'm sure your husband would love the entertainment LOL (girls in pretty much nothing - bikinis - dancing on the bar), but may be too noisy for your child, if joining you on the trip.

  • Thanks ladies!! Forgot to mention DD will not be joining us - it will be an adults only trip. All of your suggestions sound wonderful. Can't wait for the beautiful weather - even if it's in the 50's & 60's would be better than it is here!

Do you know if the Lario's restaurant is also at Downtown Disney? We ate at that restaurant before and I want to say it was also owned by Gloria Estefan, but not sure of the name.

The one in Downtown Disney is Bongo's... and there is one also in Downtown Miami!  Similar food.

And for a night out on the town, Taverna Opa (Mediterranean restaurant/club) is a lot of fun!  Belly dancers dancing on tables, and you can join them.  Plus they offer dinner, and entertainment.  Can stay for the "club" scene later.

  • Nevermind... I just looked at Disney's website and the restaurant I was thinking of was Bongos...

  • Everyone's basically recommended everything I would've suggested.  My must-dos are Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive.  There are amazing restaurants everywhere.  Taverna Opa is a lot of fun and, if you like jazz or Brazilian jazz, head over to Van ***'s Upstairs in the evening.
