Success after IF

NBR:Over 20 employees at my hospital were fired during the blizzard

If they called in during the blizzard...they were fired.

I keep seeing it on the news.

What a bunch of bullcrap.

Several of the nurses who were fired had been at my hospital for over 30 years.

I'm so happy that my shifts have consistently been before or after the major snow.

  • I was employed at a group home for individuals with developmental disabilities. If we had terrible weather we were instructed to call the police for a ride to work.......
  • That's a bunch of bullshat...that really sucks...
  • One of my co-workers was called by our manager the day before her shift (at 5am no less) and told she should show up that day and spend the night in order to be at her scheduled shift.  My co-worker as a has a freaking 3 month old at home which she EBF.  When she told that to our manager, guess what she told her..."I guess you or your husband need to go out and buy some formula because you won't be coming home for a few days".  We are freaking postpartum nurses and you are going to tell one of us to start feeding our EBF's baby formula so that she can show up over 24 hours before the start of her shift??!!!???!!!

My co-worker said "F- That" and got put on a waiting list to be picked up.  They never showed...

We live in the DC area, so we are from all over (three states) and can't rely on the police for rides.  There was a waiting list for 4x4's to pick employees up, but I am not sure if all employees were aware of this.  Most employees who were on the waiting list, never got picked up.

  • Interesting.

We have a long time (15 years) manager who committed (ahead of time, during a conference call the day prior to the blizzard) to stay on site during the blizzard but ended up leaving when other staff arrived to work and then couldn't be reached for almost 24 hours when more coverage was needed for the site.  We were not going to fire her but planned to suspend her.  But she ended up submitting her resignation instead.  My argument all along has been that emergency/essential personnel in other fields would be fired if they had done the same thing.  Obviously there are special circumstances to be considered and I don't know all the details of the people who were fired from your job (inova??) but we are there to provide life saving services to members of our community and we can't do that if we can't rely on our staff to show up. So I feel the suspension would have been appropriate.

  • I heard that the issue was beyond just the calling in.  Apparently there were 250 nurses who did not make it in, so for the 5 that were fired there must have been something else besides just this.  Apparently some of the nurses refused a ride from the emergency personnel that were going to pick them up, one of them saying "I don't want my kids to be orphans".

Also, at the same hospital, apparently when a ride was sent to another workers home, the woman said "I'm not quite ready yet so please wait".  And yet another had her own 4wd vehicle but said to the volunteer "I'm not about to take my vehicle out in this big mess".

I don't know the whole story, so I can't really pose an opinion, but I feel like there is more to it than the media knows and reports.

I only know the details on one case...so you definitely could be correct about  the others.  But there were over 20 fired...

The issue is that in previous snow emergencies, there have never been firings for calling in.  The threatening verbage used by administrators prior to the snowstorms and during was unprecedented.  I know for a fact that one of the nurses who was fired had a clean record for over 30 years (she'd never been disciplined) so this was pretty extrodinary to be fired for this.  Perhaps suspension or a discipline step would have been more appropriate.

  • That is just horrible.  I feel awful for them, especially the mom of the 3mo. old EBF baby.
  • We all got phone calls telling us that if there was a question about making it in we needed to come stay before the weather started.  I worked during both of the major storms we had here this year.  While it sucks to have to go to work, people depend on us to be there to do our jobs.  It is our hospital's policy that if you call in due to bad weather it is considered an unexcused abscense & you are subject to punishment up to & including termination.

In my opinion bad weather is NOT an excuse to miss work.  It isn't fair to leave your co-workers high & dry with no help when you call in & no one will cover their shift because of bad weather.  If you don't want to come out in it then find a job where it is critical for them to be open.
