(Not) feeling my uterus

Hi,

I'm 16 weeks, 3 days with my first and had an appointment with my midwives yesterday and they totally freaked me out because they said they were having a hard time telling where the top of my uterus was. They said they weren't sure what they were feeling and that it seemed like either I was 20-22 weeks along (not possible as far as I can tell), having twins, or my stomach muscles were too strong for them to be able to feel my uterus easily. I'm pretty sure that I've felt it a couple of times right around where it should be and I'm just wondering if muscle strength is really a possible reason for it to be difficult to feel it in detail (I did go swimming earlier in the day so my stomach was exercised as well). I'm not big, but do have a strong stomach and have already gained 15-20 pounds, so I have a major pooch - I'd think this would mean my uterus is sticking out there, but apparently not?

Anyone have any thoughts? It's kind of stressing me out, even though I'm sure its not a big deal. . .

  • I've never heard that - but then again, I'm not rocking killer abs.

That just seems really odd 'either you're super far along, having twins, orrrr we can't feel it at all'. Really? I'd have asked about getting an u/s, because that would've freaked me right the heck out too.

  • I have not had a doctor try to feel for my uterus yet. Only dopplers and ultrasounds to check the baby. I don't think I would have felt my uterus until 18-19 weeks (when I popped). Don't stress, just ask for an ultrasound to confirm how far along you are.

I would demand an u/s.  I would be pissed that you didn't get anymore answers.  That wouldn't fly with me.
  • ...my OB feels for the top of my uterus at every appt, since at least 14 weeks

  • I have an appointment with my ob in a week and a half so I'm going to get a second opinion then anyways. The midwives said it wasn't anything to worry about and that they would suggest an ultrasound if they can't tell more at my next appointment (20 weeks). It was just weird to me that they couldn't figure it out- they said I was an "anomaly" which is not exactly what I wanted to hear. . .
  • Did you get to hear the heartbeat??

  • I've heard the heartbeat twice (at 12 and 14 weeks) before, but the midwives only use a stethoscope (not doppler), and they couldn't hear it with that (which is really typical of 16 weeks but not of 20!). That's part of why I'm pretty sure I am only 16 weeks along (the stethoscope works after 18-20 weeks generally).
  • I'm not sure I could use this dr. I hear the HB on the dopplar every apppointment- and I think thats pretty much standard. ANd have had 2 ultrasounds. (of course one at 20 weeks) the first to date the pregnancy.

  • I've been trying to see if I can feel mine, and I really do believe that there is too much abdominal muscle to tell. It has always been a problem for doctor's appointments that the doctor can never palpate anything because my abs are in the way. I have my next appointment in a week, so I am curious what she will do then.
  • Thanks Luv2Run! I've always had doctor's and massage therapists comment on my strong abs so I think there might be something to this. I figure it means we'll be in good shape for giving birth and those muscles will help push everything along!
