No soft serve ice cream?

Just did an FB status update expressing my excitement for Dairy Queen to have thin mint blizzards.  (YUM!)  Girl from high school sends me a link about how you can't eat soft serve because of listeria.  Apparently Listeria can grow in the tubes of the soft serve machines if they aren't cleaned properly.

To which I say, I'm still getting my DQ on sometime soon.

Anyone ever hear of this?  Would this keep you from an ice cream fix?

Re: No soft serve ice cream?

  • Nothing could keep me from ice cream. My ass will attest to this.

...honestly? If a place isn't keeping their machine clean, they ought to be shut down. Don't get it from, like...the Chinese buffett place who probably has no idea how to truly take care of a machine.

  • It can also grow in the soda fountains, this did not stop me from having soda and soft serve when i was pregnant with DD. She turned out fine. But if you are worried ask your doctor.

  • i would still eat it.
  • Thats interesting info---where was the article from? I just had a Shamrock Shake the other day. I dont think this will stop me from eating soft serve. I loooooove soft serve.
  • Haven't heard that, but I think if it really was an issue it would be more well known.  At my dr.'s office we had to go through a nutrition class and we were told what we can and can't eat and this wasn't brought up.

Now I really want DQ!  Too bad DH is out of town to make a DQ run...

  • Listeria is a psychrophile. It can grow on regular ice cream just as easily as soft serve ice cream. That being said... eat the damn ice cream.

  • Didn't you know that nothing is good for your baby and everything can give you cancer? Sheesh.

  • Oh, believe me I'm still eating my DQ :)  Just wondering how many others were concerned about this.  Gotta love random FB advice!

LOL, "Listeria can be anywhere".  Just had a funny vision of Listeria creeping up behind me!  You are right though. Can't live in a bubble.  Can you imagine our grandmothers being worried about such things!

  • Gaaa I am tired of unwanted "advice". I get grumpy and tell people where they can put it!

OMG to funny (and sadly, me/mine too...)

  • I'm definitely not worried about it because my mom lived off of hot dogs, hoagies, and soft serve ice cream (cuz it's the only kind she'll eat) while she was pregnant with me, and i turned out quite alright, and so did my brother! lol

i do watch how much of it i eat, but to worry like that is just being paranoid, and you don't get anywhere being paranoid! :) just enjoy your ice cream!

  • I've heard that (on the bump), but I don't pay it any mind at all. No one can be absolutely sure any food place is 100% sanitary. I mean, we'd really have no where to eat out at! It's a point made, but not taken by me. I will be eating soft serve from Braum's, TCBY, McDonald's, Sonic and wherever else LO wants it from.

  • your not suppose to eat A LOT  of things when your pregnant apparently... there are a few that you clearly want to stay away from and others.... I'd eat the blizzard.... No one wants to mess with a pregnant woman who can't eat blizzards or frosties.... lol
  • I've never heard that. Sounds pretty silly to me. Yummmmm.....might have to convince the DH to run out to DQ right now.......

  • Never heard of it and don't give a crapola :D I love my deli meat and everything else. I go the 'not worry over insane possibilities' route. I've never had listeria before and don't see why it'd suddenly take root now!

  • Good grief on your friend. Sounds like the pregnancy police. I would ask to see her badge.

i have heard it too but I will still be imbibing. Our ice cream place opens April 1. Counting the days....

  • Since it hasn't stopped me from eating aged raw milk cheese and lunch meat I don't think it will stop me from eating blizzards.  I like those much more than I like parmesean cheese.

I had heard this too from a friend who just had a baby back in September so at one of my first appointments, I asked my doctor about it (or maybe DH did because he was worried about it) and my doctor said that one of the greatest things about being pregnant was eating ice cream and there was no need to worry about this.  So I probably have had at least 2 blizzards since then.

OMG it's Shamrock shake season!!!! Now I have to stop on the way home to get a HUGE one, LOL

Obviously some article won't stop me. I've worked serving ice cream at Disney, and I know how diligently ice cream places clean the machines, otherwise they clog and the tubes have to be replaced anyway.
