My PSA about soothie pacifiers

There is a reason they make different pacifiers for different ages.

A few weeks ago I had Natalie in her swing and she was playing with her pacifier. She loves to chew on it. She's got it part way in her mouth before but never all the way in her mouth. I hear her coughing and look over at her because she loves to fake cough for my attention. What I really saw was that she had the WHOLE pacifier in her mouth, nipple part back towards her throat. All I could see sticking out was the tab thingy. I immediately jumped up and took the pacifier out of her mouth. She could get it in but was unable to get it out by herself. I threw away all of her soothie pacifiers that day. There is no way I could feel comfortable laying her down to bed with one of those pacifiers after that.

Now this is the only pacifier she is allowed to have. It is HUGE. and it's heavy. and it falls out all the time. She also doesn't really like. But it's either that or no pacifier at all. If your LO has one of those 0-3 month soothie pacifiers then please keep an eye on them. especially if your LO is like mine and likes to chew on them.

Re: My PSA about soothie pacifiers

  • I just purchased that same pacifier at BRU.  It's the teething one.

  • thanks for that! I put DS soothie in the freezer and he loves chewing on the sides of it. I think it's time for new paci's anyway. I saw a 2+ year old the other day with a Soothie. Huh?

  • Can't you just wean her from the paci a little early or is she really attached to it?  It might be easier for you to just do it now, than wait til she's 1-2 years old.

it's just the soothie teething pacifier. It is really bulky for a pacifier but Natalie just chews on hers anyways and really only needs the pacifier for bedtime.

DS doesn't use a paci at night but I use it during the day when he gets cranky or just to give him something to play with/chew on when he's in his high chair. He won't chew on his teething ring or winkel.

I could have (and probably should have) but it would mean a whole lot of crying and fighting. We are just starting to get this whole bedtime thing down. I'm trying to wean her of one of her night feedings and the pacifier really helps me with that.

  • That's super scary. I have a friend on a different board whose LO chewed the nipple part off a soothie. Not sure what the age category of the soothie was, but it's a little scary to know that can happen.
