3rd Trimester

wwyd- induction or wait...

my doctor wants to induce me on the 17th...

for no medical reason...but

because my first came semi- fast (water broke at 7:30ish/8pm) and delivered at 1am)...and a week early...

however, i am worried about my body not being ready and not reacting to the pitocin correctly, leading to possible forceps, vaccume or c-section....

can i tell her, no, i just want to wait for my body to go into labor naturally....unless i get too close to my due date  and the baby needs to come out for size and bpressure reasons....

....what are your thoughts....

i have heard GOOD, really good, bad, and REALLY BAD induction stories, so i have no idea what to think about this....

Re: wwyd- induction or wait...

  • You absolutely can decline the induction. You should have a discussion with your OB about the pros and cons of what she wants to do, and what the risks are associated with waiting. But it's your body -- your decision.

  • If there is no medical reason I would not induce.  You do not have to do anything that they recommend.  They can't hold you down and induce you, you have every right to say no.
  • Man, I'd be worried about this dr. if the only reason for inducing is that your last labor went fast.  That's pretty dang ridiculous.

    I would wait!

I'd tell her to shove it and hustle when she gets paged.
  • I'd wait for sure. No way would I induce without a medical reason to do so.

  • Did she actually tell you that there's no medical reason to do it, or are you assuming that? I'd be skeptical too of a doctor who wanted to induce just because....but there might be a reason that she hasn't fully explained to you. You might double check with her - and if she does in fact say that there's not a medical need, then I'd refuse.

  • I'd definitely wait but that's because I personally had a HORRIBLE induction with #1, I'll do anything to avoid one this time.

Good luck with whatever you decide!

  • thank you thank you!

some friends of mine have done it for convience or bc they ended up having to be induced with their first....

but i think i'll be fine waiting....

    thank you for your support!!!

  • I agree with the others no way would I be induced if there was not a valid medical reason. You having a very short labor with your first does not cut it for me. Plus there are ALWAYS doctors on call at the hospital to catch that baby! lol

This exactly.  They can't tie you down and force you.  You have every right to say no.

  • I'd be ok with it, I doubt a doctor would want to induce without some kind of reason because it would open them up to to many liabilities.

  • I was induced with my first at 40w2d and had a great experience. I plan to be induced again this time around if I don't go into labor on my own by my due date. HOWEVER, I will only be induced if my body has started making progress on its own. When I went in, I had been at 4 cm for 3 weeks, and was 90% effaced.

  • Doesn't sound like it interests you in the least so def don't do it then!  I am guessing her rationale is I think subsequent labors go faster right, so if you were fast the first time I would think her concern is you might not make it to the hospital in time.  If you aren't worried about that or interested in induction don't do it.

I was induced bc my BP shot up, I was almost preeclamptic, but we started the convo before my BP went so high bc I was very very very uncomfortable and in pain-so you could say it was 75% bc of medical 25% convenience for me.  My dr is not opposed to convenience and I don't think she's a quack-I think she's human and understands how rough pregnancy is on some women-but won't do it very early-like I think 39 weeks and later.  They have a very reputable office, though I know that latest studies are frowning upon c-sects and inductions early risking baby's health, but I think if it is done VERY late in pregnancy (my case 40 weeks 1 day) it is okay-I'm no dr but I'm just saying I think there's a spectrum of appropriatenes.

  • You don't have to induce if you don't want to, especially if it's not for a medical reason. Go with what you feel is best for you and your baby.
  • We are in similar boats (6hr first labor and a DC this time to arrange very fast care for with family too far away......2hrs for me.....to get there in time) and MW also offered induction when we get further on down the line.

I thought at first how wonderful this would be and I started to feel hopeful that we really would be able to arrange for DD's care AND get to the hospital in time (and hopefully for an epi this time as I think I really want one this time!!!).

~But then I started thinking, wait, having an induction date set does NOT guarantee I won't go into labor before that time (and I would simply not consider one before 39wks but I sure would like it to be even later....40+even.....even though I realize that sort of diminishes the helpfulness of being induced at all in my circumstances) and thus we'd have a nasty fake security in all the planning we'd do for DD's care etc. And in the end, it could all be for nothing and be rushing around because we were so invested in The Plan that we didn't make an alternate. And if I made an alternate plan anyway, well, we'd be doing the same "work" that we would be doing with no induction planned, right?! lol

~I also read the personal experiences of my fellow Bumpies whose inductions ended in Csections. That would not be a favored outcome for me. However, the one that for some reason really stuck out was where her first labor was nice and quick like ours was and she chose to be induced and thus her second labor was something like 27hrs long and painful and ended in a vacuum delivery. I think I'd feel a level of regret that I'd put myself thru so much when my body obviously likes doing it much quicker. I don't know, I guess it came down to a matter of knowing I did it the first time and lived and it was 6hrs of intense from the get-go labor. I sure as helll could do that again in half the time! I just need to get to the hospital!!! EVEN if I have to bring DD with me until family can get up there to watch her while I go have a baby :)

So in the end I worked on our Plan instead to see if I could feel better about saying 'no' to the induction, because really, like you state, it's for no real medical necessity.....it's for life circumstances.....so I guess I got determined to try to change that before doing something I knew I didn't really want :)

I asked SIL who is a 21yo who was willing to take 2 whole wks off of work hostessing at a restaurant (and DH will pay her) to come stay with us for the week before and week after I'm due, covering a huge range of possible going-into-labor days (I had DD at 39wks). So now I have that and, tbh, if it comes down to it I can probably ask her to stay a couple of extra days if baby really is that stubborn.....OR I can at that point (at 41wks) elect for the induction while she can still stay. At least then I've let baby cook for as long as I feel comfortable AND SIL will be there to watch DD still.

Plus, my MW said either way she will start my internal exams a couple weeks early (around 37wks this time) so we all have at least SOME idea what's going on.

GL in your decision! Sorry I wrote such a novel :)
