3rd Trimester

Any ob's or people that work in the maternity field out there? (kind of long)

I have questions about the 3 hr glucose I gave in a took today. I was not going to take it but my midwife talked me into it. Now I regret it.

I had failed my 1 hr and obviously was told i needed the 3 hour. Well if I fail the 1 hour and Im having issues with sugar why would they then have you fast and drink straight glucose in a large amount?? I dont get it? The baby felt like she was going to pop out of my stomach for about an hour or so after I drank the "juice" and I got sick within 10 minutes of drinking it. The room started spinning, my eye balls felt swollen and I thought I was going to be running to the bathroom to throw up. They had me laying down in a room. I could barely even talk. After about 2 hours after drinking "juice" I started to feel better enough that I could sit up. Thankfully my husband was with me for this. I have now felt sick the rest of the day and can barely eat.

Im not understanding why I cant just treat failing the 1 hour through diet and being very carefull with my sugars. What is the point of going through that 3 hour nightmare??  How is this safe for the baby?

  • I'm not a medical professional, but from my understanding not everyone who fails the 1 hour test, which is considered a screener for higher probability of having gestational diabetes, actually has it.  Unfortunately some women react the way you did to the glucose drink, but the risk you and your baby would take from untreated gestational diabetes is worth the couple hours of discomfort IMO.

  • A big part of the 3 hour waiting period is to try and see if/when your blood sugar starts dropping. Or if it continues to climb. It would play a big part in your treatment. If your body kicks in after, say, 1.5 hours, then you are probably going to have good luck with diet controlled therapy. If your levels stay high, or continue to climb, then you may not have such luck just watching what you eat. Does that help?

  • The 3 hour gives them fasting glucose plus 1,2,3 hour results. Each hour your sugar should be less than whatever the reference range is. Its for your own good. I would do it if I failed because I would truly want to know if i was gestational diabetic. Sometimes the 1 hour can be off (maybe you ate or drank something, or they drew you before your 1 hour was truly up).

  • I totally understand and not arguing that not treating gestational diabetes would be harmful. But I dont understand why I couldnt just start treating by checking and watching my sugar levels and eating properly for GD? It seems crazy to fast for all the time and then drink 100 grams of straight glucose on an empty stomach just to see how you will react? I know my baby was going nuts inside me. I felt so bad I did that to her.
  • If it was harmful they wouldn't have you do it.

Ok this makes sense to me but what about this.....

Right after I left the office my husband drove me to get food. (obviously I was hungry at that point from not eating for 12 hours by this point!)  By the time we got there (maybe 15 or so mins) I was crashing. Sweating badly, very shaky and thought I was going to pass out.  So my levels definitly went down. Way down. But since it happened after i left the test people didnt even see it happen so how will that help me?

  • Because 95% of the people who fail the one hour test pass the three hour test, and do not need to be treated as if they have GD.

Because as other PP have pointed out, just because you fail the 1 hour doesn't mean you have GD. The 1 hour isn't a glucose test, it's just a glucose screening. Many people fail this but do not have GD.

If it's any further comfort, your baby going "nuts" inside you isn't hurting her at all, so don't feel bad about it.
