My RE said after my first IVF that he thinks I have poor egg quality. But I have never had any blood level come back abnormal. Not FSH, not AMH, nothing. We only got 6 eggs last time, which is low... and then only 2 fertilized normally.
I kind of don't believe that the eggs were bad, I think he may have waited too long to do the retrieval and they were over ripe. But, I'm not the doctor here, lol. Is it likely that my eggs can be bad with no other indications?
I have endometriosis but the only thing I can find online says endo can compromise egg quality if it grows on the ovaries?? Mine wasn't there.
Re: How likely is it that I have bad eggs?
All of my bloodwork came back normal. At retrieval I had 11-12 follies, but she only got 6 eggs and 2 fertilized normally. My RE said that she thinks it is a combination of my eggs being of poor quality (family history of early menopause) and poor semen specimen from DH. It may give an indication if ICSI would be helpful during your IVF cycles.
I think it is hard to say after only one cycle. My Dr was hesitant to talk about poor quality until he saw a pattern after my 2nd IVF. Did you do ISCI? Do they have a plan to change up your protocol for the next cycle? I hope they make some tweaks and you see much better results next time. I'd keep asking a lot of questions, too. Good luck!
I agree that it's hard to say after one cycle of IVF that you have poor egg quality. Perhaps a change in protocol and some ICSI would improve the # of follies and fertilization rates. My b/w has always been normal and have never had any indication that my eggs are poor quality. With IVF #1, I had a 25% fertilization rate, which is low. They did do ICSI on half of my eggs that were retrieved. We were doing shared risk and since DH has no MFI issues, the RE decided to ICSI half of my eggs to increase our chances of success. Prior to doing IVF, we had no indication that we'd need to do ICSI. They expect to see about 60% or greater fertilization rate.
My RE said that egg quality could be an issue for me because of my low fertilization rate but wasn't concerned about it after doing just 1 IVF. He said that sometimes during an IVF cycle you can just produce a "bad batch of eggs" and that is what he though happened with me.
Lots of luck to you!
Thanks so much everyone for your responses. We don't have MFi issues, but maybe I will ask for ICSI this time anyway?
This cycle my RE is heavily suppressing me, then doubling my stim meds.
Thank you. I could use a little hope for this next IVF.
