Update on Uro Appointment

Ladies,

DH and I met with our uro today to discuss our WTF appointment. The urologist (this is the one I mentioned yesterday that takes my husband's morphology very personally) does not think that we should throw in the towel on DH's sperm quite yet. He agrees with us to wait until at least April to see if the fertility vitamins DH started in December did anything to help. He said that we shouldn't operate on his borderline varicoceles quite yet because his FSH levels remain slightly elevated (13.7 when they should be 11-ish or less), and with high FSH levels, the chances for successful surgery are less than 10%. If his morph improves in April, we'll do another IVF cycle. If his morph remains the same but FSH improves, we'll do the surgery and then do IVF in August. In the meantime DH is on a maintenance medication that is not linked to fertility medications, but his doctor has given us the permission to stop those meds with proper monitoring to see if that helps at all. Then, we have another IVF consult with another clinic on 3/11 and scheduled another one with ANOTHER clinic that the uro suggested for 3/15. The purpose of these consults will be to share all the information including what our first IVF clinic said about IVF with ICSI not working for us and recommending that we go with donor sperm. So, all in all, I feel optimistic that we have a chance at having DH's sperm morph improve or at least trying again with his sperm.

And, in the meantime I ovulated today, so we decided to shoot the moon and try naturally even though our odds are somewhere between slim to none.

  • It sounds like you had a very encouraging visit!   Here's hoping that his morph improves and he doesn't have to go through surgery.  Keeping my fingers crossed!

  • So glad to hear you're feeling optimistic.

As far as "shooting the moon," why not go for it.Wink  My chances of conceiving naturally (when we were having sex) were about 1 in a many, many million, but I always fantasized that there would be one very determined sperm that made its way to the egg.

Yeah- this sounds like some good news- take it where you can get it!

Why did your clinic think ICSI wouldn't work?  Sorry, I am new and sure you have already explained this.

My husband's morphology is incredibly poor (0%). Usually when morphology is "0%", they can still find enough normal ones to do ICSI since we are talking about 0% of a very large number, and we all remember how math rounding works. However, the clinic's embryologist told us that they literally had difficulty finding even one normal sperm. We both agree that sperm donors are an option that we'd pursue, but we want to exhaust all other options first.
