So I posted on Jackie's thread that Isabella is starting on solids. And i REALLY want to make her baby food. I know it might be time consuming...but I'm willing to give it a shot. So I have questions!!!
1) what tools did you use for pureeing the food? i.e. immersion blender, blender, food processor
2) when you froze the food...did you use the ice cube trays? if so, do you recommend anyone in particular, or a method?
3) did you steam/boil/bake the veggies?? if you used a steamer, which one do you recommend?
4) traveling w/the food....on the weekends in particular we are not home for at least 2 of her meals. I need to know whats the best way to package the food to go.
If you have any other recommendations...please feel free to post ![]()
Re: baby food
Just wanted to share that the lactation consultant I go to recommended boiling some of the veggies (like carrots, for example) in chicken stock instead of just plain water so that they taste yummier and so that they absorb the extra protein and nutrients from the stock.
Can't wait to hear the suggestions from the more experienced mommies...
Nope, he hasn't said anything yet. I'm curious to hear what he tells me tomorrow. I've noticed that he says different things to different people. I guess he looks at each individual child and their development and then makes his recommendation based on that? I've heard of him asking people to start at 4 months and for other people, saying to wait till 6 months.
I kinda want to wait till she's six months old, but we'll see. There's still a long way to go...I may be changing my tune and feel ready to start between 4-5 months.
What time is your appointment?! Hopefully I see you there
Yeah, I figured it probably depends on the baby. He told me that he thought Nico was thriving well on breastmilk alone and since he didn't appear to still be starving after he nurses/has bottles, it might be best to wait. I want to wait till 6 months, but my family keeps pressuring me to start earlier.
We will be there at 9:20 am. What time is your appointment? We would love to see you!
8:40...hopefully I will catch you on the way out. You will most likely see Emma sporting her new earrings unless I chicken out at the last minute
I started Matthew on solids at almost 6 months. I live on wholesomebabyfood.com. It has a ton of info.
Here are a few of my tips:
- What I do is I go to Wholefoods and get certain organic fruits and veggies. The rest I get at Publix.
- Blender is makes things easier. I have a food processor but it sucks! I find that it takes longer.
- I use regular ice cube trays and then I transfer the cubes to zip lock bags. One cube is about 1 ounce of food.
- Every Monday I take food to Matthew's school.
- Depending on the food, I either boil, bake or steam. Wholesomebabyfood can guide you.
- When we go out I take small cooler with his food. If we are at the mall I'll go to Starbucks and ask for hot water. I put the little bowl in the hot water and it heats up quickly!
- If I'm overwhelmed, I take all of the food to my parents house and I'll make it there while my parents play with Matthew. I'm scared of the pressure cooker so my mom makes his lentils. I'll even leave food there and she'll prep everything for me.
ok, so wholesomebabyfood is the place to go to...great. thnx.
I wanted to steam the veggies b/c I read on the wholesome website that it keeps the most nutrients in the food.
Jenn- thnx for the idea of chicken stock. But I think that making the chicken stock will be a mission. B/c the store bought one has A LOT of sodium.
Progresso has no MSG and a reduced sodium stock
you can also use broth, it still flavors the food and adds nutrients!
I second (third?) wholesomebabyfood.com. There's lots of info there. It's really simple, though, once you get the hang of it.
Example: Peel apples, chop up roughly (remove center), put in pot with small amount of water, boil until soft, and put in blender to puree.
Same with sweet potato, carrot, etc.
After a few months, I started to use the potato masher instead of the blender to give some larger chunks to the food to help them learn to "chew" with their gums. And I would add cinnamon to the apples or pears.
For grains, I tended to use regular grains (I never bought baby cereals). I blended regular rice or oatmeal (dry) and then cooked it up with extra water to keep it more liquid. Quinoa is a great one b/c it's so small that you can give it whole after only about a month.
For meat, I would use the blender as well after cooking up ground beef or chicken or whatever.
To freeze, I bought small containers (4 oz) and just used those. Never used the ice cube tray. A friend also gave me a ton of glass baby food jars that she was going to recycle, and I used those.
I usually made a week or two worth of food at a time and froze it. I would take it out the night before to defrost in the fridge. I usually froze the different food separately so that I could combine different flavors and foods at will.
I never used a food processor so I don't know if that's easier or not.
Hope that's helpful!
