Thoughts on Chocolate Milk?

or any other kind of flavored milk for a lo that won't drink plain regular whole milk? yay or nay? someone told me choc milk is better than no milk but I am not so sure.

Re: Thoughts on Chocolate Milk?

  • B gets chocolate milk if we are out, or if I feel like he hasnt been drinking enough.

FWIW if I get a sippy full of regular (or chocolate) milk in him that is a good day.  He doesnt not like milk, he would just rather have water.

  • My pedi told me that choc milk in a cup at 18 months was preferable to a) no milk or b) regular whole milk in a bottle.  T was resistant to weaning to the sippy and this was how we did it.

He now drinks any milk out of any cup, so it didn't ruin whole milk for him for life.

  • I was drinking chocolate milk yesterday and Zoie wanted some and I let her try it and she thought it was awesome. I don't know how bad it is but I didn't see the harm.

This or if she asks Daddy ever so sweetly. He's a sucker.

  • I just saw an article on this same thing on MSN not to long ago.

I never got to read it - but they line catcher said that it isn't as bad as you think it is.

Suddenly my DD stopped drink milk - she is almost 3.  She will drink it if I say do you want me to add some chocolate to it.  I don't add that much - just a squeeze or two.

If my 14 month old went on a milk strike - I might just be pushed to try a squeeze or two for him also to get him to drink it.

  • i give DD a 4oz sippy of chocolate milk (Ovaltine, just a little bit), everyday with lunch and have been for a few weeks.

  • My daughter drinks chocolate and strawberry milk all the time.  I mix chocolate with white milk so it's not so thick.  She gets probably 80% white milk, with 20% chocolate.  I don't even drink the chocolate milk straight, I do a 70% chocolate with 30% white ratio.

My daughter doesn't drink a whole lot of milk, so when I can get her to drink it, I'm having a good day.

  • I wouldn't give it, but that's just me. I don't think milk is the end all to nutrition, which I know is an unpopular opinion. Lili's doctor said that as long as she is getting enough calcium and fat, then it's not a big deal if she refuses to drink whole milk. She drinks a combination of kefir (a yogurt/smoothie kind of drink with probiotics) and almond milk and eats yogurt and cheese every day. I also give her other foods that are a good source of calcium, like broccoli, spinach, chopped almonds, etc.

I tried to give her a chocolate milk box from Starbucks once as a treat, and she spit it out and handed the box to me.

  • DS loves plain milk so it's not an issue but DD will drink chocolate milk with everything, if I would let her. There are quite a few chocolate milk mixes with extra vitamins in them. I say go for it. JMO.
  • I actually just read an article somewhere that said studies show that chocolate milk is good because of the extra antioxidants that the chocolate provides.  Not sure how accurate the study is though!

  • DD loves milk, but we still give her Ovaltine occasionally, with no qualms.  At least it has vitamins - it's better than Hershey's syrup!
  • my son as a bf baby until 20 months wanted NOTHING to do with cow milk. at all. until one day he sucked down and entire box of horizon choc milk. i talked to the ped about it because i wasn't sure about the "rules" for milk as he had never been into it before (some moms here say their ped limited milk intake) and he told me that chocolate is a chelator (sp) that actually inhibits the calcium from being absorbed, so i should try another flavor. i ended up just taking the chocolate out all together with zero protest from ds, but my advice to you would be to see if your lo will drink another flavor.

i think you tend to be right that a tiny bit of choc in the milk is way better than no milk. :)

I dont see anything wrong with it, but I love choc milk.  When I drink it in the morning I split ds's milk with half choc, half white.  Its alittle treat for him.  THe kids I use to nanny hated white milk, all they ever had was chocalte.
  • He's had it but we don't buy it on a regular basis.  When he has had it though I cut it 1/2 with regular milk (as I do for my own as well-too mush sugar!)
  • Little boxes of Horizon Organic strawberry and chocolate milk are the only things that helped us survive weaning from the boob.

He still drinks white milk just fine, but even if he didn't, I wouldn't sweat giving him only strawberry milk. My only concern with chocolate milk is caffeine. I'm very caffeine sensitive so I assume he is, too, and he's a terrible sleeper as it is.
