4 month wakeful

Anybody experience a 4 month wakeful period? I know some people think it's real, some people think it's a myth. DS has never been a great sleeper, but will usually eat and go right back to sleep...the past 3 nights have been awful. He wakes up and eats then just wants to look around at everything. If I leave him in his crib he won't necessarily cry but will babble to the ceiling for 10 minutes then get fussy. He is still napping well at daycare, I'm wondering if he's napping too well to compensate for not sleeping well at night. He took a 3 hour nap there yesterday - but at the same time sleep begets sleep right? I'm not looking for him to STTN, he never has...but a little more sleep for him and I would be great! Any experience with this around this age? I'm not ready to CIO by any means. Thanks ladies!

    I think DS is going through bouts of it.  Every couple of days he just doesn't want to sleep.  Usually I can get him down for a nap no problem.  Now it is a looonnngggg process.  Last night he did his usual wake up around 2:30 for a feeding.  He ALWAYS used to go right back to sleep.  This morning he was ready for business at 3:00am.  We get so close to STTN - then we take a giant leap backwards.  

    I wish I had some advice for you - I feel your pain!

    I did and many of the other moms in my Mamistad group had it as well.  They are becoming more socially aware I think and wanting to hang out rather than sleep.  She still sometimes does the babbling overnight but will eventually fall back asleep.  Allie isn't all that great a napper so I don't think your LO is sleeping too much during the day.  I CIO but she typically goes back to sleep after babbling so maybe your LO might do the same?  Things should right themselves after a while.  He just wants to hang out with Mommy and Daddy!

    yes, DD did and it lasted a long time too, weeks. She didn't STTN till almost 10mo old but the 4-mo wakeful was pretty bad, she'd wake up and want to  play and stay up for hours

    There was a post about this a few weeks ago. DD and DS had it (both strictly BFed, FYI). From my experience, all you can do is ride it out. However you choose to deal with the wakings is up to you. Both of mine calmed down after I fed them. It seemed to be what they needed to hit the "reset" button (at least for an hour or two), so I made sure to keep the room as dark as possible and not interact with them at all. After I fed them, sometimes they'd stay up babbling or fussing, but I didn't go back in...rocking, patting, etc. didn't put them back to sleep, so I figured the less interventions, the quicker they'll learn on their own. Around this time, DS started napping much better, so it's like he had to figure out own sleep schedule.  And now he's back to sleeping much better - still waking once or twice a night, but he's capable of going six hours.
