3rd Trimester

My Birth Story... ending in a c-section

Hi all,

I was much more of a lurker than a poster, but really enjoyed reading birht stories, so I will post my own.

My due date was March 2, and on Saturday February 27, at 11:30 p.m, I woke-up to use the bathroom. While peeing, I heard a pop and lost the second part of my mucus plug. I went back and laid down and started feeling cramps. I got up a little later to go again and this time, felt a small gush of fluid. I thought my water had broken. I called the on-call doctor around 2 am and we got to the labor triage area around 3:30. I was having contractions 5 minutes apart for 1 minute long. Upon arrival, they said I was 2 cm, and the contractions weren't strong enough to admit me. I was really upset. They told me to come back if they got closer together or stronger. So my husband and I went back home and waited. Around 10 am, I couldn't take the pain anymore, and went back to labor triage. They told me I was still 2 cm, and I needed to walk. I had to walk the hospital for 2 hours and If i dilated to 3, they would keep me. We walked the hospital. This was the worst part of labor. The contractions were coming every 3-5 minutes lasting around 2 minutes each. When we returned to triage, I was in tears from being in so much pain. They checked me and I was 4 cm. Things happened very fast from here.

Once admitted, I got my epidural in about 30 minutes. That was heaven sent and I highly suggest it. My whole personality changed. I got the epidural around 3 pm and by 6:40, I was 8 cm. This is where things started to change. I stalled. By 8pm, I was given pitocin to make my contractions stronger. This wasn't working and the baby's heart rate was going up and showing signs of distress. I was given oxygen and lots of people came in the room. The doctor said that she was worried about the baby. They were going to do a c-section. The room was full of people and I was given lots of drugs through the epidural. We were in the O.R and by 10:07, Ava Elizabeth was born. She was 8 lbs, 11.2 ounces and 22 inches. The doctor said she was in distress because her head wasn't going to fit through the birth canal. They had to do a lot of tugging and pulling to get her out.

Once out, she screamed and cried. I cried as well knowing that she was okay. The recovery process was only bad the first day or so. As long as I keep my pain meds under control, I feel fine.

Best of luck to all of you. Being a Mom is wonderful!
