When do kids start playing in sand boxes?
And for those that have them or had them - is it a HUGE PITA to deal with (sand everywhere in the yard, random bugs burrowing in there, fire ants, etc) and would you do it again armed w/ the info you have now?
I know you can buy sand at Home Depot/Lowes but I remember that another Nestie (forget who, sorry!) was commenting a while back that the sand you can buy at those places is not safe for your kids.
We can use MIL's turtle sand box if we want it - but I'm not sure we do.
Re: sand box questions
I love ours and DS loves it SO much! We also have one with a cover, I think that's pretty much a must. I don't think it's a PITA at all, I just make sure we cover it as soon as we're done playing.
No idea about the sand, we bought the play sand bags at Home Depot and I'm not concerned. It's not like he eats it. Well, he doesn't eat much of it, anyway.
ETA: he does toss sand everywhere, but our sandbox sits on a wooden deck, so the sand just sifts through the cracks and goes under the deck.

How did you get all the dead ants out?
Not sure of the safety part but Crayola makes colored sand. Bought some for my nephew last year...it was in the parking lot portion of the lawn and garden section at Wal-Mart...it's a little more pricey but he loved his blue sand.
It's been awhile and I don't remember the carcasses being a problem. Maybe they decomposed quickly. I really didn't care as long as they weren't alive and biting and the cinnamon was a nice, handy, safe pesticide.
