dinner question

Friday I am having my parents and IL's over for dinner.  There will 6 of us total eating.  I am planning on making a pot roast w/ potatoes and carrots and a salad.

So my question is, how big of a pot roast will I need to feed all of us?  I will need a big enough one so everyone could have 2nds if they wanted to.

TIA!

Re: dinner question

  • I never know the answer to these types of questions, but here are my thoughts.

Let's be generous and provide each person 3/4 of a pound.  So, maybe 4.5 to 5 lbs?  or 5.5 to have a little wiggle room???

Im curious to read other (probably better) responses =)

I usually just make enough for a couple of meals.  I love leftovers!  I also make it in the crockpot, so it's pretty easy.  I think .5lb per person is ample, but you can always do 1lb each just in case.

  • 4.5-5lbs should be fine.

  • My rule of thumb is 1/4lb per person because most people will also eat the appetizers and side dishes when at a party; however, if you are really wanting to have extras and leftovers, I'd up it to 1/2lb per person.   :)

  • I just made a 3.5 lb pot roast over the weekend for 5 adults.  DH and I had leftovers last night for dinner, and I'm making a pot roast bolognese sauce right now with the rest.
