Trouble TTC

I think MH has ADD

I don't mean that joking either.  I actually think he has ADD.  He has even mentioned it himself.  He has such a hard time focusing on things.  He has all these different things he needs to do and spends more time figuring out which to do and in what order than actually doing them.

For example, today he said he woke up and knew he needed to bike, eat, shower, go to Best Buy and do various things for work and yet here we are hours later and the only thing he's managed to do is eat.  He's been wandering around the house wondering what to do next and not actually doing anything.  And it's been way worse since he quit smoking.

I keep telling him to go to the doctor and get a rx or something.  He's so wishy washy on that though.  He says he doesn't want to be diagnosed with something psychological.  I think he needs to suck it up and go to the doctor.  Any other suggestions what can help him? Know anyone like this who was helped by a rx?

  • I would definitely get it checked out.  Meds can help so much!  I've got a number of male friends who have adult add, or adult onset add.

One thing you can do at home is to stay away from caffeine (why can't I spell today!) and sugar.  Too many stimulants make it worse.  There are some good books on adult add.  I'm sure you can find some stuff in the library.

  • He drinks Red Bull like it's going out of style.  He claims it helps.  Maybe it's making it worse.  I will have to head to the library and get some books.  I wish I could talk him into going to the doctor.

  • I second laying off caffeine! I don't think you have to jump to ADD yet -- especially if he recently cut out smoking. Perhaps he is overwhelmed by things and just needs a little "organization" to help him put things in order?

It happens to me, too, sometimes. I will spend so much time figuring out when to do things because there is just sooo much and it's almost like I don't know where to start.

Maybe you can help him write a daily list of a couple tasks and times? But not all the tasks? Maybe if he sees things broken up and can foresee getting things done a little at a time, that may help?

If not, yeah, I'd see a doctor if it keeps up for a while and interferes with his daily life.

  • I don't see how Red Bull can do anything besides get him spinning in circles faster.

I'm convinced that I have ADD, and too much caffeine renders me useless.

  • I will try to get him to write himself a list.  I mentioned it and he said "I have the list in my head".  Well obviously that isn't working for him.  I think I am more worried about it now that I'm not working because if he can't concentrate to do his work (he owns his own IT consulting business) then he can't bill and can't bring in any money!  It's so frustrating

Maybe you can buy the daily timed list calendar things? I "keep it in my head," too, but when I am stressed and my plate is full then it is harder to 'pull' one thing out of my head and do it.

And I think the TTTC stress affects guys differently -- like we think about it and analyze it all day, every day, and talk to each other about it. When they think about it they try not to focus on it, which only takes up lots of space in their brain, and they don't talk to others and get it out, kwim?

  • I'm like this too! Embarrassed but I know it's a form of ADD. My brother was diagnosed with it. So my flakyness has a lot to do with this.
