Failed the one hour glucose!? Seriously

I eat healthy, excersize very regularly, and have no traces of diabetes anywhere in my family.  But I failed by four points!?

Should I be worried?  I take the 4 hour test later this week.  I had two pieces of toast this morning with eggs 3 hours prior to test time - but my doc told me to eat breakfast as normal.

  • GD can happen to anyone, even the healthiest person. It's all about the hormones.

  • 95% of people that fail the 1 hour, go on to pass the 3 hour.  The 3 hour is actually the "real" test... the 1 hour is just to screen/weed people out.

I'm sure you'll pass. It's a bit torturous, so make sure to bring things to do.

  • I was told to fast before both tests, but I took each test first thing in the morning.  I failed the one hour by one point, and passed the three hour with flying colors.

  • Yours is 4 hours? I don't know if you should be worried. It seems like there are a lot of people that fail the first one by a few points and pass the second one. I take my second one tomorrow. I also failed the first one by like 3 or 4 points. So annoying. Good luck to you though.

Agreed!  It can't be prevented no matter how healthy you are.  It's a lot different than type II diabetes.

  • I failed the 1hour by 3 points and am currently sitting at the Lab doing my 3 hour.

it's not exactly a party but the 2nd our is easily the worst (where you're blood sugar spikes and then drops), it's gotten a little easier in this final hour (maybe because i know i can eat soon!)

  • It has absolutely nothing to do with being healthy. Anyone can get GD.

  • Thanks for the pep talk ladies.  Mine is "4" hours (really 3).  Apparently the time there is closer to 4 so that's what they call it in my neck of the woods.  Will they let me walk around during my waiting periods?  Or will I be confined to a chair!
  • I was able to walk around during mine and my husband put a movie on my phone so I could waste time watching that! I failed the 1 hr by 6 points and passed all 3 blood draws on the 4 hour ... you should be just fine! Good Luck!
  • I guess that just goes to show, you never know.

I have pcos and have been told that my blood sugar was high in the past, my mom had GD with my little sister, my docs told me I've gained way too much weight, so with all that I thought for sure I was going to fail my 1 hour, but I didn't.

I really hope you pass the next one Smile

  • I failed with DD by 1 point and with DS by 10 and I passed the 3 hour both times.

Take a book with you or something to do. The only thing I could do was drink water, but had to wait in the waiting room. Oh and this may seem silly but don't chew gum before you go in. I did with my 1 hour and they think that's why I failed.

  • Yep, failed my 1hr by like 9 points. I did the 3 hour one today, it really wasn't too bad. I was able to go in first thing in the morning so fasting wasn't too hard. Also, they let me drink water during my wait. Just hang in there, you'll be OK! Like the other ladies said, it can happen to anyone and has nothing to do with how healthy you are. However, I understand the feeling of failure and frustration that comes with being told you failed!
  • Did the bread you made toast with contain high fructose corn syrup? That could have thrown things off just a touch.

  • I failed the one hour but passed the 3 hour. Don't worry I am sure you will be fine.

  • I failed the one hour test by 2 points and just found out about an hour ago I failed the three hour test as well. So...now it looks as though I will have to check my blood 4x/day and alter my diet. Like you, I'm a pretty healthy and active person (I completed a marathon in January!) and don't have a history of diabetes in my family. After the intial rush of anger/frustration tears I realized it could be a lot worse.

Chances are you will pass the three hour test so try not to stress about it.

A hundred hearts would be too few To carry all my love for you.
