Beco or Ergo Carrier?

I'm trying to decide which carrier to get for baby#2.  Can the Ergo be worn on the front?  What has your experience with either carrier been?

I have a Beco and love it.  I carried my 2 year old in it until I got pregnant.  I bought it when he was a little over a year old.  It has a built-in newborn insert, but I haven't really used it yet with #2.

  • I just got an Ergo and I love it!  However, DD was 10 months when I got it so no experience with the little ones.  I did have a Moby though, and I really wasn't a fan.

  • Have you checked out the Pikkolo? After researching all the carriers including the Ergo and Beco I have decided to go with that one. It can be worn forward facing. I know the Ergo can't do that and I am pretty sure the Beco can't either...

ETA It can be worn in the front, what I was trying to say is that the baby can't be worn facing out in the Ergo and if dd#2 is anything like her sister, she will want to be facing out.

  • I have a Beco, but I have never used an Ergo.  I love my Beco.  I used it with DD through 18 months and it remained very comfortable.  I would keep it in the car just like a stroller and we use it all the time.
  • I have an ergo and love it, never tried the beco.  The ergo can be worn front, back, or hip - baby/kid faces in at all times, cannot face out.  I had a bjorn and frankly, DH and I both wish we'd have gotten the ergo sooner.  It hurts nowhere even when I wore my then 2y/o while pregnant.  She's 36ish lbs and almost 4 and it's still fine to carry her backpack style.

I have no idea how the ergo is with a tiny one - I'd think they'd get a little lost in it.  So if you're going to use it with a newborn, I'd probably go w/the beco simply because it's a tad more adjustable for the littler ones.

I have the beco and love it cause it is easy to get DS in.  Also it's comfy cause the weight is mostly on my hips.  Of course after carrying DS ALL day, my back hurts.  But not as much as the bjorn!

  • I have the Ergo- I got it when DS was about 5 months (conversion from Bjorn).  It's sooo comfortable- I used it until DS was 2.5+ (for us, it's a great way to take the subway) until I got PG.

I almost exclusively wore it on the front (DS faces in- towards you).  For some reason it wasn't as comfortable for me on the back, but I seemed to be in the minority on that.

I never used it when DS was an infant- so I can't speak for that.  I will either use the Bjorn for the few months until DC#2 can go in the Ergo (I think the Bjorn is perfectly comfortable/fine for newborns) or will get the infant insert you can buy to make the Ergo infant-appropriate.
