Painting a Crib?

My sister no longer needs her crib. It is a very well made crib, no recalls and completely safe.  Problem is, it's in a honey finish and I would want to paint it because it does not match the shabby-chic white painted furniture in the bedroom we'd use for the nursery.

Has anyone painted a crib before? What sort of things should I consider before considering this?

  • I wouldn't do it, but I haven't done a lot of research on it either.  I was just giving you my input.

  • we're painting ours (IKEA Gulliver)- well my FIL is... he's going to get advice at a paint store on the best type to use-- but in terms of the process, you'll probably need to sand it, possibly prime it (depending on the finish/paint used), and paint it.. we're also considering a poly-finish to keep the paint from chipping (going to ask the paint guy about that).  I'd also make sure there is plenty of time for drying/curing before LO comes.  I figure that if cribs are sold painted, there can't be really anything wrong with it as long as you do it right.

Thanks all.  I think if it is done right, with safe materials, and properly sealed it should be fine.

  • we painted ours, it was off white and we wanted white.  We simply sanded it to rough it up and then used a non-toxic no voc latex paint to paint it.  We used a small roller brush for most of it and so far so good!  It turned out really well actually and we tested it and no chipping or peeling.
