Tantrums at 11 months!

Any suggestions on how to deal with tantrums this early(11 mo)? Its starting to become a daily event. If you take something away that she is trying to put in her mouth she screams and throws herself on the floor kicking and crying.  Do I ignore it or try to console her?

Re: Tantrums at 11 months!

  • When I take something from DD and she starts crying, I just try to redirect her to something else.  I replace what I am taking with something appropriate.  Sometimes she takes it, other times not.

  • OMG, YES! DS dos this.  I just re-direct him to another activity if I can.

  • C is doing this too. I just carry her to the middle of the room, lay her on the floor in all of her kicking/screaming glory, and I walk out. I find that if I stay there, even trying to distract, she screams longer. If I walk out, she stops in about 10 seconds. The instant the screaming stops, I swoop her up and we go about playing.

  • Uggg we have been dealing with tantrums for 2 months...she knows exactly who she can get away with things with (daddy!)

Usually I redirect her to something she is allowed to play with or put in her mouth...if she still tantrums (which she does sometimes) I ignore the tantrum itself, and try to make another activity seem like its the most fun thing in the world. I NEVER pick her up or give attention to her negative behaviors. Her tantrums have been happening a lot less lately, so I think she is starting to understand.

I have a behavioral psyc backround...which has helped a ton....although it much more difficult when youre dealing with your own!

  • I empathize and then redirect. If he continues, I will ignore it.
