so what do I do when he starts rolling in the crib?

I know this has been asked before, but it seemed like such a remote possibility that I never paid attention . . . and now, right on his six-month birthday (his half birthday? his half-aversary?), he rolled from back to front in his crib. Swaddled. Twice. He did not like it, if the eyes-closed yelling was any indication. Tips? We've turned him over both times but I think I remember hearing that we should let him figure out himself. Does that advice change if he's still swaddled? (Does this mean we need to unswaddle him now? . . . crap.)

  • Can you swaddle him with his arms out?  That way he can roll back over...

  • The first time Warner rolled over while swaddled I distinctly remember thinking "fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck!" and yes, we pretty had to stop swaddling him and it sucked.

I could still do it for naps occasionally if he really wouldn't settle down, but at night I was afraid he'd get all hung up in the swaddling blankets (because when he rolled he usually partially shimmied out of them), so we had to stop. Lots of people suggested swaddling him with his arms out, so he'd still have that secure feeling without actually being swaddled, it didn't do us any good.

So after about a week of me being in denial and still trying to swaddle him, we finally just stopped and it was a rough (and long) week or so, but finally the novelty of rolling wore off for him and he settled down to sleep easier without being swaddled.

LOL, this exactly. Nathalie was ok after a couple of nights of extra wake ups but got into the unswaddled swing of things pretty quickly.  Walking into her room seeing her rolled over and swaddled one morning freaked me out way more than the thought of lost sleep.

  • Our doctor told us when DD started to roll on her stomach in her swaddle it was time to unswaddle her (this was about 3 weeks ago). Now she sleeps on her side. She will occassionally end up on her stomach, which is unpleasant for everyone. It takes her longer to start crying now, which is good, but she will start to cry eventually. I'm hoping she'll figure out how to roll back to her side or her back, but that has yet to happen. She still sleeps pretty soundly on her side, so it hasn't been too bad.

ETA: Oh, and sometimes when she's falling asleep she'll keep rubbing her eyes, or moving her arms around, so we do sort of hold her arms down sometimes to help her feel enclosed while she's falling asleep. Sounds barbaric, I realize, but it helps.

This. This whole thing is my nightmare. Gahhhhhh. He seems to have settled down for now but I guess it's good to know what in store . . . I guess duct taping him to the bed would be wrong? Yes?

  • DS became strong enough to bust out of his swaddling blankets (and therefore make them really loose) before rolling became an issue.  So we transitioned him to something like this: https://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2409033.  He would start the night or nap swaddled (seemed to need the security), but he always managed to wiggle at least one arm out.  When that happened, we didn't worry about the danger of loose material, and he could roll to the side like he prefers.  It lasted about two weeks until he was in just a regular sleep sack and now sleeps with no problems.  It may not be an option for your DS since he is already rolling, but if the cold-turkey approach doesn't work for him, it could help with the transition.  It may allow him to get used to the feeling of having one (or both) arms out gradually - and maybe be able to roll himself back over? - while you still feel he's safe.

Sidenote: DS can roll back-to-tummy and the reverse, but he never does in his crib for some reason...maybe yours will stop once he feels he has more freedom of movement?

  • Not sure about the swaddling (we weaned off of it awhile ago, but it took two attempts), but C starting doing the rolling thing a few weeks ago. After a day or so we gave up on rolling him back and I guess he got over it. We find him asleep on his stomach about 50% of the time now. The first day (he did it more during naps) was kind of rough but it all worked out.

  • I'm no help with the rolling over but just wanted to say that we went cold turkey with the swaddle on Friday night, his 4 month birthday, because he rolled over during the day and we got nervous. Surprisingly he had a normal night for him on Friday and Saturday (normal for us still involves a few wakings to eat) and even seemed to self soothe a little easier since he could get his hands in his mouth. We did it on a Friday in case it was a really rough night. I was SO nervous but we put him in just the sleep sack and he seems okay. Good Luck! I'm not looking forward to when he rolls on his belly at night and gets mad!

  • Alexa has just started rolling over in her crib, too.... only 2x so far, during naps.  We don't swaddle, so I don't have any advice about that.  She hasn't done it at night yet, but we do put her in a sleep sack at night, so I'm not sure if she has less mobility then.... Maybe you want to try a sleep sack as a transition from swaddling?

Alexa is not very good at rolling back over, so when she does wake up that way, she cries and cries.  I'm just making sure to do lots of extra tummy time during the day to help her learn to roll back over on her own...  and hopefully it happens fast so we don't have too many long nights...

  • I dreaded the day we had to stop swaddling, but we did it when Madeline started rolling and it only took a few nights for her to get used to it.  Instead, we use a halo sleep sack, which she can roll around in.  Now we always put her down on her back and she flips right over and sleeps on her tummy.  Not sure how my once tummy time hating newborn, became a tummy sleeping infant!

    GL!
