I work for a gov't agency where we deal a lot with peoples names. I just took a class on ethnolinguistics and cultural names and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw "La-a" (La-dash-a) on one of the example lists!!!
I swear I thought that name was made up and only existed in Bump land -- and maybe it was, but some people went off the deep end and named their child La-a. There is a real, documented case -- not just "my friend's mom is a teacher and her co-worker had a kid named...."
We were given the examplet because the name messes with the algorithem we use because it's spelled and pronounced so differently.
Anyway, I thought it was hysterical that the crazy name made it all the way to my class.
Re: Funny strory about "La Dash A"
Sorry, but I don't buy that it was included because it was a real name. I think it was there because of the reasons you gave, but as an extreme example, regardless of origin.
And possibly because whoever compiled the info thought it was funny.
yeah the same thing happened to me as well in a similar class i took in college. there was la-a, "shithead" pronounced shih-teed and "asswipe" pronounced "eh-swih-pay"
they do it just to show you that names/words that look like one thing in one culture can be pronounced totally different in other cultures.
for example the word "mama" in espanol- if the accent is sobre the wrong consonant, then it means boobs.
Eh, the software developers said it was an "actual applicant." I don't think they would waste their time explaining it if wasn't a real hiccup in the system. We didn't go over the other weirdo "names" like shithead, male, female, twina & twinb that I hear on bad baby name threads.
Regardless, it was funny.
Agreed, funny. And I'm not saying you're making it up. (I usually say that, but not this time.) I think someone was having fun.
Academics can be wacky.
