I started with apples and went from there. DS doesn't like the cereal and doesn't like bananas (yeah, he's weird).
Its only as messy as you make it/let it get. DS isn't at the point that he can hold the spoon, so I hold it for him and wait until he's done flailing his arms around before I even try making an effort to get the spoon in his mouth. I think I've had one drop of food on the floor and that was actually my fault, not DS's.

Mady has really only had bananas in it, and it can get messy. She loved it though.
Oh, and we've put ice cubes in there before, when she was having a particularly hard time teething
