Meds for a cold while breastfeeding?

I feel a cold coming on. My throat is super sore and dry today which is how Matt's cold started out over the weekend. What can I take to help while breastfeeding? I hope i'm not limited to the same meds while preg because that really sucked...

Any suggestions would be most helpful! Thanks!

  • Hey there...

i just looked this up on kellymom.com (great resource btw..) and psuedoephedrin is safe but may reduce your milk supply just a bit.

    Hope that helps!  feel better!

  • Be very careful. I took one dose of dayquil and one dose of nyquil and my milk was completely dried up within 24 hours. Knowing that now, I woul choose to suffer through the cold, just in case. Just my personal opinion. I hope you feel better soon!!!

  • Wow...no kidding!  Yeah, I would take the cold anyday over that.  Jen, did your supply stay dried up?

It was the weekend before DD turned 6 months old. We all got a nasty cold/flu. After being miserable for 3 days (and still nursing) I took some nyquil and pumped and dumped. Then the next day I took dayquil and pumped and dumped all day. That was Sunday. Monday morning I pumped and only got like 4 oz total (usually got 8oz in the morning). I fed that milk to DD. Then pumped later in the day and only got 2oz. I spent the whole next week nursing and pumping like crazy to fix my supply, and got nothing. I was SO upset, I was NOT ready to be done BFing yet. I still had about 20oz in the freezer so used that up, and then have been in only formula since then. While it's kinda nice to have my body back, and be able to fit into my clothes and normal bras, I really miss nursing.

My pediatrician said that any cold mess that are meant to dry up your nose and throat, will dry up your milk also. I thought I would be fine to pump and dump for a day...I was wrong. Wah wah wah, lol.

  • how old is your little one? you want to avoid decongestant. you can take over the counter pain meds, cough drops, and even a nose spray to clear up stuffiness. most over the counter meds are safe while BFing. your main concern is that decongestants will dry you up.

  • As gag me as it sounds gargling with super salty water and using a NetiPot are going to be your best bets. I think I was able to take Delsym or something like that while BF'ing. You'll want to look that up though.
  • you'll also want to drink 3x's the water/milk/liquids you normally would. A cold in itself can take a hit to your supply.
